Measure the length you need and mark it then use a tubing cutter to make it an even cut the automatic shaft is hollow. Remember to remove the inner plastic push rod and also cut it to function with the new shift knob. It takes careful planning to make it work right.

I actually have that tool, cut both the same amount? what about where the clip goes in to secure it?

The lengths of the the shifter and rod will depend on the shifter handle you use if you are going to use the stock shifter handle then you can use a hose clamp to guide the saw blade when you re cut the grooves for the clip, just use the same spacing as stock and cut both rod and shifter equally.

Pulled up this old thread to show my quick and dirty auto shift knob made from the leg of an old chair and a chunk of 1/2" ID tubing from the handle of an old bottle jack.

I didn't like the stock T-bar shifter either. Most others sometimes look oversized for the Fiero's console.

I went with an 84 Corvette dark-grey leather wrapped shifter and shortened the steel shaft by 1-inch.
The knob matches the dark-grey of the interior. I got a new soft-leather shift boot from Dickman.
I later resold it because I swapped to a Getrag 5-speed.

this is the knob im using from a third gen camaro.

Snake head shift knob from a SSEI Bonneville.

I have another shifter to lower it a bit but not too low.

I think most of us will agree that the original factory T-handle looks awful in a Fiero.

When I bought my '86 GT in the spring (my first automatic Fiero which I don't particularly care for), I was surprised at the sheer size of the shifter knob. Good gawd, who designed this large ugly thing?

One of the first things I did was buy a Camaro (leather) shifter knob off eBay. Best $2.25 (plus $4.99 shipping) I've ever spent!

While some alternate shifter knobs look very nice I decided to stick with the stock Leather T-handle. With my 4 speed OD auto there is little need to shift and IMO the stock leather T handle does the job. As for aesthetics there are numerous choices to suit most tastes..
