What was your Mom's favorite type of music/bands/songs?
My Mom was Elton John, Phoebe Snow, Cat Stevens, Aretha Franklin, Carly Simon, Johnny Rivers, etc.

My Dad?
Mostly the sound of his foot being planted firmly in my azz!

Talk radio. 900 CHML.

I don't think she turned the dial once in 50 years.

Age and location of upbringing will make a huge difference in what music our respective moms enjoyed. My mom was born (in 1919) and raised on the family farm in Prince Edward Island. I remember she enjoyed watching Don Messer's Jubilee on CBC TV. For her, I'm sure the music brought back memories of home, memories of family. And for me, it brings back memories of her.

My mother played boogie woogie and swing on the piano.

These were a couple of her favorite songs:

My grandfather played country.

My father did not play an instrument but listened to classical music, a lot of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.

My mom has been a huge Eagles fan, as long as I can remember. She was also a Blondie fan (probably because that was her nickname).

I don't even think my mom likes music. I think she'd even think it was weird to have a radio playing music in the background; after all, if you're not listening to the news or the weather or the school closings, you might as well just leave it turned off!

My dad though was a big classical music buff. He had countless recordings on reel-to-reel tape, and then eventually transitioned to cassette format (he used to get LP records from the library and record them, bonus points if it was from a brand-new record that had never been played). Unfortunately I don't think the tapes have really held up well after all the years stored in the basement.

My mom was usually found singing more than listening, or at least humming while working around the house, making up songs with us kids names in it. She also had a radio on alot of the time. She showed affection for lots of stuff, among many others throughout life; motown, beatles, John Denver, Johnny Mathis, Elvis, classic country, instumental stuff such as pan flutes, hymns and contemporary Christian music of that time. Lots more.

My Dad, more what I would call barbershop style quartet stuff.

When I initially responded Here, I limited myself to answering the question above... but damn, if everyone is also going to mention their dad, so will I.

My dad was one of those marvelous people who could hear a song once, and then with very little effort, play it back on the piano... chords, melody, the whole works. He could improvise on the fly as well. And he was self-trained, his only music lessons being on the flute way back in grade school. His taste in music ranged from classical to traditional Irish to popular, keeping in mind that being born in 1920, he wasn't all that enamored with metal or punk.

It's funny how people can have such strengths and weaknesses. My dad had absolutely no mechanical aptitude at all. He couldn't screw the cap on a tube of toothpaste without cross-threading it. But musically, he was very talented.

When my dad was 95 years of age, he was in the hospital after he had fallen at home and broken his arm. He had been in the hospital for a couple of weeks, and I eventually persuaded him to play the piano in the patients lounge... as a form of therapy. He resisted at first, as he hadn't played for a few years, but I convinced him to try. It took him awhile to get comfortable, as his arm was still healing, but eventually the music just poured out of him. It sounded great. It was like he had never been away from the piano. Fortunately, I had my camcorder with me, so I recorded him. Staff and visitors were poking their heads into the lounge to see where this beautiful music was coming from. The next day my dad complained he wasn't feeling well. It turns out he had contracted C. difficile while there in the hospital. He was dead within a week. I'm so glad I have that video of him playing.
