In a sobering measure of just how frayed the nation's social fabric has become, boos and jeers rained down upon Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred during his presentation of the 2020 World Series trophy for the National League Los Angeles Dodgers, who prevailed over the American League Tampa Bay Rays at Globe Life Field in Arlington,Texas, on Tuesday.
The Dodgers standout third baseman Justin Turner had been abruptly removed from Game Six after the Dodgers received confirmation during the game that he had tested positive for Covid-19. Turner was replaced at his third baseman's position at the start of the 8th inning, during a game that would reach its conclusion within the "regulation" 9 innings of play. Turner--incongruously in the eyes of many observers--was seen in the close company of the other Dodgers players during the team's immediate post-game victory celebrations on and around the playing field.
Newsweek's Dan Cancian offers some insight into the complex tapestry of perceptions and emotions that are likely behind the verbal derision directed at the Commissioner from the fans that attended the game and remained on for what became the World Series Champions crowning ceremony. The game was played before a crowd (if one could call it that) that was limited to just 25 percent of the stadium's capacity, because of Covid.
