Folks leaving areas that are run like garbage. Seems like a good idea.

It would be impossible for me to not agree with him.

I've turned down 4 different Production Manager positions on the west coast for similar reasons.

EXACTLY why I left London last year. Difference is, here you don't have to leave the province to escape exactly what he is describing. All you have to do is move 100-200km to small-town rural where they never got around to building the kind of infrastructure that attracts the people causing the problems.

I find it difficult to believe that there isn't "small-town rural" anywhere in California. The whole state isn't Los Angeles.

A lot of remote, small towns in CA are home to retired mafiosos or neo-hippies.

If there's any truth to that, is it any different in Arizona... or in BC for that matter?

Not every state, or town is gong to be the same, sure.
Would I venture you would be best off in a less populated area though? Probably.
In one with less influence by idiots and folks with crooked agendas? Yes.

The size of the population has little to do with it. The biggest problem in CA (as I see it) is, a full time legislature, all bent on buying votes with the tax payer's money.
Tree huggers and social entitlement crusaders abound there. Plus a thousand other issues. Most center around the Big Cities where the votes are.. But, corruption can be found anywhere if you look for it. The problem (again, from my perspective) is that all of CA is controlled by those major population centers.

Los Angeles County
County in California
Area: 4,753 mi²
Population: 10.04 million
LA County accounts for approximately 27 percent of California's population.

While I have seen some nice small towns, every one of them would be priced out of my reach unless I won the lottery.
If I win the lottery I wont be moving to any place in California.

But here I am stuck in the middle with Lisa.

As with almost everything else, price is based on supply and demand.

Those of us fortunate enough to be born and raised on the west coast are rather loathe to move/live anywhere else. Problem is, the natural beauty attracts wealthy foreigners (who invest in the nicest locations, and the trickle-down effect drives up all realty prices)... and at the other end of the spectrum, the mild winters attract riff-raff (street people) from across the country. That leaves the regular folk, the working class tax-payers, caught in the middle. I don't like what I'm seeing develop here in Vancouver, and I suspect it's very similar in major cities all down the west coast. It's probably going to get worse before it gets better... if it gets better.

It wont. I left the left coast a couple months after the Bay Area quake (that was an ummm...experience...for a guy from Ontario) because of the pure stupidity, and its only been a downhill spiral since then. It's a shame, because some of the best people I ever met were there, and the deep south......now one area has become TOTAL loonie-land and the other a pariah. <sigh>

Really hope I live long enough to see the California culture do a complete 180. It's a beautiful state with great weather, but run by absolute morons. Hopefully someone starts a far leftist utopia in Alabama or somewhere in the deep south and they all flock there en masse.

I would pay to watch that. Even spend 20 bucks for a bucket of popcorn.

The only reason I'm sticking around in this craphole state is the hope that the entire housing market will crash and burn to where I can buy several pieces of property, rent them out, and then sell them for a killing when the market restores to normal.
