Cervids have been known for decades, to eat meat, or at least try to. They are ruminants, but not solely herbivores.
The only difference in this story and all the others like it is the fact that it was photo/video documented.

I think it's been documented that alligators will eat certain fruits if they can get their snouts around it. Berries? Or uncultivated citrus trees? I just remember very clearly that there were news reports, but not the details. In the context of a riparian or riverine environment, the 'gators are literally going after the 'low hanging fruit."
