I was watching a small airplane doing touch and go at the Glendale Municipal Airport today, and it was obviously not your average small plane. It was a little too far away for me to get any useful pictures, but I will attempt to describe it.
- low wing
- tapered wings, the trailing edge tapered forward
- square edged vertical stabilizer that slanted back
- retractable tricycle landing gear
- long and sleek looking
- single or two side-by-side seating (small canopy, no side windows)
- the fuselage continued straight back from the top of the canopy.
It was the sound that first caught my attention. It had a loud, unique exhaust note, almost like a WWII fighter but it was not a radial and looked thoroughly modern.
The pilot was really throwing it around. As soon as he climbed out, he would roll hard into a turn, almost 90
o roll, and keep on gaining altitude. A couple of times, when he completed the turn, he would open the throttle and you could really hear it.
Any guesses as to what it was?
