Twas the Night Before Christmas at Maryjane's house,
where his wife and his sister, his son and son's spouse,
sat down to a gumbo son had fixed with great care,
Over rice it steamed and smelled good in the air.

Our bowls were filled and we started right in when the dog outside began a loud din.
we heard heavy footsteps on the porch steps near
and daughter in law said "Santa Claus is here!"
When a knock on the door came loud as thunder
and then it flew open and filled us with wonder.

And what should appear, to our shocking surprise,
but a neighbor from nearby, a disheveled look and glazed over eyes.
From a white shirt front a red glob appeared
from a hole in his gut, looked like he'd been speared.
He said in a moment that he had been shot,
other than that, he said not a lot.

I sprang up from my chair to go to the door
but the rest just kept eating, their gumbo and more.
"Bill shot me" he uttered as we sat him right down
at the yuletide table we'd just gathered 'round.

911 was called in less than a flash,
as we lifted his shirt like a red and white sash.
One hole in the belly and the same in the back,
from the gun's chamber and no more from the stack
where a bullet had entered and gone on out
as he grimaced and moaned but he never did shout.
"Oh it hurts!" is all he would say
as we waited for help that was soon on it's way.

My son's wife was standing in shock,
and she sent my son to fetch, load and lock
my own 20 ga from it's place by the bed
and wondered who was next thru the door, with some dread.
Once sister and son's wife flagged them down
coming from Coldsprings the next nearest town,
The sheriff arrived and then DPS.
20 minutes had passed since the message I'd left.

We'd moved him out front and he lay on a bench
and bled on a blanket and would occasionally wince.
Half hour had passed as the medics arrived
and they took over his care & shined a light in his eyes.
Took his blood pressure and cleaned both wounds
then loaded him up & away they all zoomed.

The Sheriff and trooper were the last to leave
as they went next door to see what was to see.
Before they left, off into the night
they said Merry Christmas to All
and to All a Good Night!

You had an eventful Christmas I see,
I'd laugh but the story is not filled with glee.
Was it domestic violence that caused the shot to ring out?
Could it be that is what this story is all about?
While I write these words purely in jest,
I bet your neighbor would have liked a bulletproof vest.
A new gift to give added to the list in fear,
In hopes of preventing a repeat next year.
Still, I think most here will agree,
New words from Don are a pleasure to see.

I hope aside from the shocking events, that you holidays were blessed and your health is well. It truly is good to see your name pop up and to know you are still kicking.

It seems that someone was a bit confused on the Secret Santa concept. Did he survive?

He survived. ...really small hole coming and going for a 40 cal.
It's 'complicated'....but
It was over the usual type thing. Livestock and bad hay.

Doing fine.
Cow prices have been rock bottom for several months and the winter has been mild tho extremely wet, wwhich is worse on the cattle than dry very low temps. Days and weeks of drizzle, mist, sporadic thunderstorms, fog and dismally gray cloud cover.
I need it to dry out so I can getthe place spiffied up to show so we can sell and move back West.

Been considering Loving County Texas, near the county seat of Mentone.
Hudspeth county would be my second choice.

I didn't get to eat but a few bites before tshtf and it was nearly 11 pm by the time I returned from where it took place because I had to make sure the buildings all got locked up and the horses were secure. And, I was hosting the traditional Christmas Day dinner so I went straight to cooking when i got back home so I get a frew hrs sleep before everyone started arriving.
Day after Christmas, i got the leftovers out and found out the gumbo had increased it's heat by a couple of magnitudes but it was still good. My son is a great cook in his own right, having grown up and spent most of his 34 years in Lafayette La and married a Cajun girl before moving near here in 2017.

My poor daughter-in-law is not used to such goings on, and was in shock and really did make my son go get my Mossbburg from the bedroom as she was afraid the shooter was going to come after the guy, but I knew the shooter well and knew he wouldn't.

(No charges were filed and they turned the shooter loose about the time I got to the scene of the shooting.)

That gumbo sounds good!

No charges filed... so the guy who got shot was just "well I deserved it anyway"?

I really don't think that is the case, tho I do know he precipitated the event by engaging in an argument with one of the females present at the scene as well as being adamant he wasn't going to address the hay problem as asked to do. It was/is up to the sheriffif's dept and DA whether to file criminal charges or not......not up to the guy that got shot. Precedent takes over.
None of the people there (4 inside the building and one outside running a tractor) were the property owner tho all had written and/or verbal permission to be there, and permission and right to do what they were doing. The property owner was out of the country but was up to date on the hay problem and told everyone "do whatever needs to be done immediately to protect the horses". There was only one person that didn't get on board with that and that was the guy that got shot.....I had been up there a couple hours before and he told me he wasn't going to do as asked.

In retrospect, even tho I had house guests for Christmas Eve, had I just went back up there, told everyone to leave and took care of the hay myself it would not have happened.
Honestly, I'm sick over the whole thing and it has placed me in an uncomfortable position of being in the middle of a group of people that now have nothing to do with each other.

Don its nice to see you post.
While we can have empathy and feel bad for people its is not on us to take respectability for the actions of others. Even if you had done as you suggested it still may have escalated.
Just be safe and let cooler heads prevail.

Merry Christmas

Oops, you beat me to it.

Dayum, I type 40 minutes a word. Longer if I have to read what I intend to type.

If you will forgive me, it was my first post since we talked.

I am also glad to hear from you.
