Not quite true. I lived/worked in Brisbane for a couple of years and never had an encounter with any creature nastier than a camel. I spent a fair amount of time in the interior in the boonies as well as in the water diving. I did see a few Man o War jellyfish in the water but did not even encounter any Blue Bottle jellyfish. No issues with sea snakes or any other critters along the coast and on the Great Barrier Reef.

I avoided rivers where there were known saltwater crocodile populations but did go in a few fresh water locations that had reported bull sharks.

Shoot, they have so much space. I think people forget how MASSIVE Australia is. I mean, it's roughly the same size as the continental United States, and sits ALL BY ITSELF out in the ocean.

We have jets, bombers, and missiles now... so not really a big deal, but what was England thinking by dumping their prisoners there and giving up that territory?!

If I was playing something like Civilization on the Earth map, that's the first place I'd go to start building my empire.

The only thing about Australia is... with the exception of the coasts, the entire interior except dead-smack in the center (Alice Springs?) is barren wasteland and / or totally deserted.

You can't find a territory more suitable for rocket launches.

The Brisbane River (where most of the local school teams practice and often have races) has periodic sightings of Bull sharks and the rowers are still ending up in the water sans boats fairly frequently. Sometime this is accidental and sometimes intentional. However, I never heard of any rowing team deaths/injuries from sharks. Since one of my kids rowed singles and eights, I often joined them on the river without incident (even to the camera).
