As part of my cardio test to find out what is making my heart go into Afib, I had to do a chemical/nuclear stress test yesterday. I've done the ones on a treadmill before without a glitch but this was different. You lay on a tracked gurney looking thing, hook ya up with all the leads on your chest then shove the gurney into a big donut shaped (think Stargate) looking thing, and inject radiation as a tracer to take picture of your heart. Then, they inject a chemical mix in the iv to stress your heart. I can't say it stressed my heart exactly, but stressed all the rest of me to the point I was ready to make 'em take me out of it. Can't really describe it, but thought I was drowning is the closest I can come up with. Not really pain..just ... well...never want to do another one as long as I live. Can't say it felt like what I thought a heart attack would be like either. Among the lingering side effects I noticed (especially last night) is that I'm no longer colorblind and have been colorblind my whole life. Had horrible dreams all night too, what little I was able to sleep.
Nasty nasty chems...

Oh, I get that. I had a chemically induced stress test done the last time. And I won't do that willingly again. I hated it and felt like s**t afterwards. I have also done the nuclear one, but they had me do a test on a treadmill after they had already gotten a baseline radiography and then went back after for the second pictures. I think that the people that do these type of things need to be a little bit masochistic or something. All of my tests were done because I was having chest pains and they were chasing "heart" troubles. And it turned out to not be my heart. Instead, it is esophageal spasms and they hurt just like having a heart issue.

I am hoping and praying that they can figure this out without too much more effort.

x2... SERIOUSLY?

That is pretty goddamn profound, and I hope you told your doctor about it.

Have they checked to see if you are having issues when you eat, that the sphincter doesn't let the food enter your stomach?

There are temporary fixes (botulism shots) and permanent (surgery) I know someone who had the surgery, and said they wish they did that from the beginning (instead of the shots)

yes seriously, tho it is most likely a temporary improvement. I've had it happen before when an injury occured like flash burns from welding but never from a medical procedure, but various vision problems are one of the side effects listed for the Adenosine that was used to inflect cardio stress.

Your problem just happened to be an improvement
That's interesting.

I was supposed to do a chemically induced "nuclear stress echo" at one point. The couldn't get a good image with the dye, so they did a regular echo, as a baseline. Then they had me run on the treadmill for a couple of minutes, then did a second echo.
I was curious if the test was as thorough as the one they had initially wanted to do, but it appears that I didn't really "miss anything".

I hope your results come back "clean".

Edit - And yeah... I have had esophageal spasms before. Still do, from time to time. They'll scare the hell out of you.
I find that red wine will tend to set them off. Drinking water or (especially) milk helps me to get rid of them.

Steve,
Thought that was solved when you quit buying that wine by the case.....

I won't know anything until next week after an echo is done and the consult that follows. The one I did this week is actually called a PET (positron emission tomography). Not real sure what they are looking for...
(I sure hope the echo procedure isn't also a chem induced thing)

It is my understanding that a PET scan is much more precise than a CT scan.

Best of luck with yours.

Who told you THAT?

But inflation takes its toll. "Two buck Chuck" is now three dollars. The sulfates are still free.

yep, I've drank it several times.
Why and how they choose that name and label, I'm not really sure.
Wine labels are kinda like the old labels that used to be on citrus crates..sort of a niche type of artwork designed to catch the consumer's eye., and there is a collectible aspect to the old crates, and some wine bottles.

Some would not make the PR/PC cut today.

Airplanes, trains, cowboys, Indians and 'grown-in-America' were common themes too.

I'm guessing this one was pre world war2 era:

Nope, the problem is not that. Actually, it is because my sphincter is not strong enough and gastric fluid backs up into my esophagus. This causes spasms. And they hurt just like a heart attack. My heart doctor finally figured it out after several different tests including a roto rooter job up my arteries.
He figured it out after I told him the nitro he gave me makes the pains go away. He asked how long it took and I told him 5 to 10 minutes and then he told me that if it was my heart the pain would go away in less than a minute. But, since it did go away at longer time frame it was my esophagus. It is called nutcracker syndrome.
I might end up getting an operation to help restrict the backing up of the gastric fluids. It is called a fundoplication.
