I've got high end camera drones and built 70mph+ race drones but I found a little 3.5ch hellicopter similar to but smaller than the ones I got started with. I've had more fun with this thing around the house than anything else I currently have. It fits protected in my laptop bag and gets flown just about any time my nephews are around.
I like how cheap it is and the fact that you can not only control the altitude, but also the direction.
I used to have an Air Hogs Havoc Heli (the Apache model) and it was very fun. But you could only control the side to side movement so it was hard to pilot. I might look into this.
Look up Syma S107. Similar easy flying, a little better looking and can be found for at least under $30. When looking at these little copters you want the counter rotating blades and for the tail rotor to be horizontal. The Airhogs have single main rotors and vertical tail rotor and the tail rotor can't keep up with the rotating force of the main
The syma s107 is what I started with, these function the same but the smaller size and the the remote/charger/case that contains it makes it so it can live in my laptop bag.
