I flew down to Dallas Thursday to pick up my friends Caddy CTSv race car he ran in the Gumball Rally. It came in to Houston by ship and was transported up to Dallas just in time before the storm. I left Dallas at 7am Friday before even any rain. I got back to Columbus by 6pm. I put just over 1100 miles on the odometer. The car is a beast with over 900 hp, heavily modified suspension, brakes, and paddle shift 8 spd. It would still go sideways when you stomped it at 90mph. It was such fun...almost like driving a Nascar race. I saw no cops in Texas, one in Okla, none in Missouri where I was able to run 140-150 most of the way. Illinois was the worst...construction every 20 miles where you had to slow to 55...and cops everywhere. The rest was very fast too until I had to run slower for a long while in traffic behind a cruising Highway Patrol. I had to fill up on gas every 200 miles or so. Stops were only for fuel, bathroom and food all at once. Only one close call at all when a semi in a lane that ended merged over and I had to slam it down hard on the brakes...which were also awesome. It was a great trip. Ill get some pics after I clean it up in a week or so. It was just too dirty for now and its at his house. All the decals, numbers etc are all still on it. Most fun ive had in quite a while with a car. I had one C7 Corvette 'try' to race, but I destroyed him. The whole trip was on interstates...only got off for gas.

Actually, it really didnt. I didnt see hardly any cops except in Illinois, and they didnt seem to pay any attention since I was just running with traffic by them. I had to be carefull with noise though...2" long tube headers with straight thru pipes. Hood, nose, decklid and fenders are carbon fiber. I did find it a handfull in the few places I hit rain. Just touching the gas gave instant wheelspin, even with 12" wide tires.

Roger,
Being honest, I'm calling I have sincere doubts about a lot in this post. But, if true, I would consider you and those on your path to be lucky to still be alive.
Please let me know prior to any other planned adventures so I can avoid your path. You are going to get yourself or someone else killed.

Well can you tell me how else you go 1100 miles in 10 hours (I believe thats an average of 105)? most of Illinois and Indiana was 75-85 (cops). It took me 2 1/2 hours by jet from Columbus to Dallas. Maybe I was transported...lol. All the traffic was very light except in Okla City, St Louis and Indy all of which I bypassed. All of it was interstates 35, 44 and 70. Im skilled at driving high speeds. I used a Beartracker that locates any police vehicles within 2 miles. Ive done things like this a number of times. I drove my Ferrari kit from Columbus to Carlisle once in just over 3 hours. I didnt even have but one close call (as noted). That just resulted in a hard slow down, down to 60s, I only stopped right off the exits for fuel for a few minutes. I did keep both hands on the wheel at those speeds, but did manage to do one pic a little slower.

Im a safer driver at 140mph than most are at 65. Ive never had a highway accident. I dont have them myself, and manage to avoid the idiots that dont know how to drive. If im ever in your area, id be glad to advise you so you can stay at home.

The cars owner drove in the rally mostly over 150 in Europe, slowing to 80s in cities for a couple thousand miles over 7 days. It ran all over starting in Riga Latvia and ending in Mykonos Greece, with stops in Budapest and Warsaw among others. If your doubts are the car itself, I talked to a CTSv owner thats all stock. He went to a Caddy get together at Talladega, and had a speedway top speed of 195. This one is supposed to be over 217. It also has the dyno sheet in the car.

You can believe or disbelieve whatever you want. Has no effect on me. I had the fun, and made a handfull of cash.

It's your story, you tell it like you want to. I'm also not saying it's not possible, just stupid.

While you may have superior driving skills, most don't. Driving at those speeds (as you described) is dangerous to all concerned, the drivers you're about to pass have no idea how fast you're coming up on them, JUST LIKE THAT SEMI.

I've done stupid things in my life to include excessive speed but, endangering others is not your right.

I also spend a lot of time on the road, I (as well as you) know, it only takes one unexpected move by the other driver and someone is dead.

Please let me (us) know of future planned trips so I can stay off the roads you're on.

Excellent, mind sharing the year, make, model, color and tag number of the vehicle?

I'll be sure to let "everyone" know.

Edited: I am curious to know one thing though. Why? Was someone's life dependent on you getting that car back so quickly or were you just getting your kicks in while endangering those on the road?

Ron, I was going to say something but I chickened out. Kinda hard to go up against one of the forum old timers here and come away with your privates intact.

So, I'm glad another old timer had the balls to call Roger out on this.

Roger, keep your excessively high speed runs on the track.

It is not cool, it is stupid. Shockingly stupid behavior coming from someone who garners a fair amount of respect here.

Ray,

That should answer the "privates" question..

I'm not taking sides here, I think a lot of both of you. I have a readout on my dash that tells me the speed of vehicles in front of me. the majority are going 85-90 on the interstate. some are going over 100. I'd say 1 out of 20. The fastest it's read so far is 140, that was a motorcycle. (go figure.)

It's not right, not safe. But it happens all the time. I've had cars pass me going 90 in a 70, drive past a state trooper in the middle, and nothing happens.

90 is not 140.

Look, this nonsense is indefensible. Doesn't matter how cool some of you think it is.

I'm for sure with Ron on this. I've seen tons of youngins get ripped up on PFF, but old ass Roger does it and it's as though he is living the dream...

I'm not acting like I've never done anything of the sort, but that doesn't justify actions. As to the entire stories validity. I think I've also heard Roger talking about how his 2.8 or 3.1 turbo would stomp anyone on the track. As always, I take his smoke with a 1/3 a grain of salt.

A picture of the dash at 110 MPH on a public road is pretty good evidence of reckless behavior in anyone's book.

But a SENIOR member here?

Well, that's different.

That's cool.

I've done high end blast before on highway.. at 3 am with no one but me on the road, and I'd never try to tell anyone it was wise..

Yes my turboed Fiero was fast. Fast enough to beat most of the street racers in the day...it was 15+ years ago. I did get beat by a Viper. It was also faster than a production 308/328 because it had more 50+ more hp and less weight than the real ones. I never ran anyone ever on a track, so its obvious you dont know what your talking about.

my local in town speed limit on freeways is 55-65. Nearly everyone does 80-85...or even over. If you drive the speed limit of 65 your an obstruction and going to get run over. I drive way ahead of where I am and I know exactly where im going as opposed to a lot that dont have a clue. Over the weekend we went thru a lot of construction zones with speed limits down to 45. I never saw a single vehicle going thru any of them at less than 65.
I always slow for construction for workers safety...unless im between cars going faster where it puts ME at risk. Its actually a rarity to see someone under the 55-65 limit.

Hes leaving the lettering on, its my friends car, not mine. I only picked it up and delivered it . Its not a track car, its completely street legal...even has Texas State Inspection sticker. He bought and built if for the illegal european cross country road race. Nice to have $150k+ just lying around for toys.

I personally dont care what anyone has to say...I still had an awesome time and didnt have any even close calls except for the one truck that illegally changed lanes without any warning. Still didnt even squeal the tires as it was barely an issue. After slowing, I just passed him in the other open lane. I even used turn signals changing lanes the whole way. There was no nitetime driving...left at dawn and got home at dusk. Okla and Missouri were mostly turnpike with very light traffic. Lots of time Id go 2-3 miles and not see another car...very few trucks.

Yep, all good for me. Besides, if youve watched any news in last 6 months youd know the new American way is do whatever you please whenever you want and screw everyone else. I could even burn down the neighborhood and claim it was because my feelings were hurt because millennials and baby boomers dont get equal rights. I pay for those roads and ill use them as I see fit... especially toll turnpikes. I rent the portion im on at that time. They even gave me a receipt.

No Problem Roger

When you finally kill someone, threads/posts like this will most likely help the prosecuting attorney put you in jail. Just calling it like I see it.
Thankfully, I won't be on the jury. My participation in this thread will surely disqualify me from it.

We've all done something stupid in our past but, most of us don't brag about it.

If this was on the Autobahn where the roads are designed for such adventures and drivers are aware and prepared for Speedy Gonzalezs to come racing by, I'd never say a word.
But, this ain't the Autobahn. Yeah, lots of people speed but, not by that much (assuming you really did what you say you did). Additionally, your driving skills (at your age) are not as good as you think they are. Have known or met a few pro racers, every single one of them thought they were God's gift to the driving world. Most of them have horrible driving records. You're as good at 140 mph as most others are at 65? Yeah right...

I dont need to make excuses. Okla and Missouri turnpikes are just like the autobahn...in fact better in most places. They can charge me if they want. Ill more than likely only live to 75 or so by my own estimation...dont personally know anyone that lived longer. I just go to funerals. So I get a trial in 2 years maybe. Then of course there are appeals that drag another year or two out. So tops Im in jail for a year before I croak from a heart attack or embolism. It actually surprised me that it didnt draw more attention...guess I went by fast enough they just thought it was advertising. Even cops I did see sitting in medians didnt pay any attention going by them at speed limits. The only people I really saw noticing it were at gas pumps when I filled up. Hes been driving it back and forth to his office for the last week. He lives in a strict area too...ive even been hassled by cops there for not having my seatbelt on parked in a store parking lot. I havent had a ticket I remember in decades, and never had an accident on the road in 50 years. I have had a few WHERE I GOT HIT by stupid drivers who dont know how. Not my fault when someone pulls over in my lane and slams on the brakes or comes down an entrance ramp without looking, crosses 3 lanes and hits my side. Yes im a much better driver at twice the speed than most others. Im very comfortable at 150 mph in a worthy car... No excuses. In a lot of cases, driving slow just makes you an easier target to hit. Id do the same thing again, so all you babies can stay home and off my roads. lol.

I don't know. Could be just me. But I've observed that the internet seems to give people an over inflated sense of moral high ground.

Couldn't care less if you drove yourself off a cliff on your own road.

At 150MPH you'd probably get pretty far too. All the way to the crash site.

BUT..............NOT..............ON................PUBLIC................ROADS.

I'll try to remember to remind you of that when someone close to you is killed due to a stupid driver like Roger and his over inflated sense of his driving skills. Whether or not Roger is an excellent driver or not is not really the issue, none of us can fully anticipate what that person next to you or are coming up on is going to do. They expect other vehicles to be some what close to the established speed limits, not traveling at twice that limit. They will change lanes and drive based on what one could normally expect.

Doing 140+ mph on public roads is stupid, doing it for that distance is endangering everyone on the road. If you don't recognize that, then...................... Well, hopefully you'll figure it out. Most folks speed to some extent, been guilty of it myself. But, not to that extent for that kind of distance. Roger claims that semi made an illegal lane change. I'm curious to know if that semi-driver even knew Roger was coming up on him that fast. Very doubtful and Roger (for damn sure) doesn't know. Yeah, I think Roger's actions (if true) were pretty frigg'n stupid.

Roger never did answer my question about why, sounds like his ego is in charge. How's that line go from that Tom Cruise movie go? You're writing checks your body can't cash.............. Roger has a very old check book. When he is finally nailed, he'll go to jail. Hopefully, no one else will go to the hospital or the morgue.

Edited: One other thing, I've driven every interstate in Oklahoma and Missouri in the past and in fact was in both states (driving) twice in the last month, I have also driven the Autobahn, they are not the Autobahn by a long shot. Basically, Roger is full of himself.

I just took my Toyota Avalon up to 110 on I-90 on Tuesday. I held it there for a minute or so, then brought it back down to the 70's. Not a car in sight. Not a worry in the World.

I am against street racing and the such. But, when the moment is right, and all is well, I have had nearly all of my vehicles that are worthy well past the speed limits on public roads. I have driven my old 89 Mustang over 170mph, a Corvette upwards of 180mph, and my current GT at just over it's max of 130. I have never had my F150 over 80mph.

Enjoy...

Tony,

I think we've all done that for approximately 2 minutes, just to see. Heck I did it on the last trip to Kansas because the wife said she'd never been over 100MPH.

This was different.

Here we have a 71 year old bragging about a long distance run at irresponsible speed and even a picture of the dash at 110MPH.

He is a legend in his own mind.

I have never exceeded the limit in such a way for more than a minute or so at a time on public roads. In fact, I have one speeding ticket 11 years ago in a station wagon for doing 82 in a 70. Other than that, nothing. Ever.

I have had that Mustang mentioned earlier at several race tracks. Watkins Glenn was my favorite. I was also able to drive in several Ford sponsored events, and was able to bring my LX out against current Mustangs in the early 2000's. Good times.

My fun: I love cornering. It could be at 15mph, as long as I can test out the limits of my 1987 GT at a somewhat safe speed. I am blessed with roads here that allow me to do this on a regular basis. There is a spot on the way to Harrison, ID that is never in the sun due to the mountains. There are 40' drops into Lake Coeur D'alene, but hairpin turns that are always wet from no sunlight. After a certain bend there is a sight line that allows a visual of anything that may be approaching from the other side of the bay. I can do 15 - 25mph and hold a drift for 8 corners. Honestly, the adrenaline of that is seriously what helps me to enjoy life. It is my favorite recreational activity hands down, and has been my entire life. I will lose testosterone, but never the desire to drive.

Ive driven on autobahns too. Oklahoma highways, especially the turnpikes are as good as any other state ive been in. I lived there for 8 years or so. The crappiest roads I was on was thru Illinois...you tear your car up over 80. Best road ive seen lately is I-44 going thru Missouri. Ill still bet Im a better driver than almost any of you. Show of hands of how many of you have driven 50 years with no accidents ? For prob 30 of those I put on 40-50 thousand miles per year. I had a Shelby Mustang I put almost 70,000 on in just over a year. I put 100,000 on my Ferrari kit after I built it.

so....

Tony,
We all guilty of speeding from time to time. We're all Fiero enthusiast and enjoy our cars. The point is, doing it when and where it doesn't endanger anyone but ourselves and those willing to participate in the activity. I didn't build/modify/convert seven different Fieros so they'd be slower. I believe we've made the point but Roger is too damn hard headed to admit his excessive speed and duration with no good reason was dangerous to others on the road. Anyone who doesn't recognize that is a fool. We've all played at one time or another.
