Cars are lined up at gas stations, a family member had to go to three different stations in Salem to find one that even had gas.
Stores are nearly out of milk, bottled water and some foods.
And the eclipse isn't till Monday morning with a totality of just over two minutes.
Makes you wonder what would happen if there were a real emergency.
Nothing new.. in the north , if they even hint of the word snow,, in the southern east coast if they say tropical storm, on the plains if they say twisters..
I Do have a bad feeling about this one, not from anything the eclipse itself causes, but I can see a bunch of those peaceful protester groups raising hell... and starting crap.. We shall see, hopefully not, but my gut is telling me otherwise..
It's not like this is the last eclipse either... In a couple of years Texas will have a better one than this. The only unusual thing here is that it's going to be seen across the entire country (more or less)...
I actually don't see too much special about it, have a lot of people bought into the "we're never going to see this again." Media hype?
Heading for Wilmington, NC for a night and then on to Manning, SC for the big event. That's the closest place in the path to home with some decent motels.
Booked it six month ago because the rooms were going fast. I guess if I had an RV I could have avoided that but then there's the whole poop pipe thing.

And I'm sorry, but this is a big event for me.
I'd have gladly let you stay at my house for free in Knoxville while I'm in China. I have some rounds stockpiled and a few nice weapons in case of zombies. I think my house gets 1:20 total eclipse time. The wife and daughter are headed to almost the very center near Tellico lake with about 2:20 total eclipse time.

Thanks for thinking of us. If things "go south" on Monday we might have to head on over.
FWIW, we will both be armed while on vacation, but that's just standard operating procedure for us.
Thinking about it some more, wifey will probably make me go back and rescue the cats even if Armageddon approaches.
What the heck, in nothing else, they'd probably roast up OK over a fire.

I dont get the big deal myself. I might look out the window sometime during it if im not watching tv. Have your own eclipse and save money anytime. Just hold up a cardboard circle the appropriate size to cover the sun at arms length and go for it. Best time will be just before sundown so you get the darkening effect too.
omg...its 9:36 on 08/18/2017...!!! This is the only time in history it will be this exact time...lol
We will get about 70% coverage here. I will be out on my morning bicycle ride just as any other morning. The weather should be perfect and the eclipse should keep it just a little cooler than normal. All hail king sardonyx!

I saw a full solar eclipse when I was a little kid... like 7 or something. It was pretty cool. I think the whole thing lasted about an hour from start to finish (can't really remember). Maybe it was in Acadia National Park that I was watching it.
This one, I'm going to get my daughter to watch (I'll use my welding helmet), but I just don't understand the fanaticism about it.
It makes me realize something...
The dumb part of our population was always in the dark about everything. But now that they have "equal access" to technology and information, they go nuts. People freak out about everything... whether it's a viral video about someone saying Pineapple in Korea, or a Solar Eclipse.
There is no reason why gas stations should be out of gas, or grocery stores out of milk, because of an Eclipse.
I can MAYBE understand when there's a Hurricane. We were out of power for 2 weeks, and some homes didn't get power back for a month in South Florida.
I think the run on gas stations was caused by a news story that mentioned that there may be a shortage due to all the expected visitors. All seems back to normal today.
Local business is hyping the story too with ads like this:
Never let an event go to waste (paraphrasing Rahm Emanuel).
Will be at my pond damn near the center of totality. If anyone wants to make a trip to Waterloo, IL come on down. Beer and fishing is mandatory. We are 25 miles south of St.Louis

FWIW, I read today that a welding helmet with a darkness rating of 12 does not protect your eyes. You must use one with a 13 or higher rating.
There are reports that some of the cardboard glasses that are available from many sources are counterfeit. You can tell by looking at a non-frosted incandescent bulb. You shouldn't see anything but a slight glow. If you can see the bulb it is not safe.
Also, for the 2 minutes or so of total eclipse you can look directly at the sun. It's the partial eclipse that's harmful.
It's not like this is the last eclipse either... In a couple of years Texas will have a better one than this.
Brad
Please enlighten me on "Better one than this". I'm a little confused on what's better than a 100% Solar Eclipse versus a 100% Solar Eclipse?

Isn't it strange that after a bombing, everyone blames the bomber, his upbringing, his environment, his culture, his mental state but … after a shooting, the problem is the gun.... Open your frigg'n minds, think about all the other tools that can be made into WMDs.
I sincerely hope that life is never discovered on another planet because, sure as hell Progressives and Socialists will want to send them money.

I'm sure all stations bumped the cost per gallon a few cents also.. knowing they be seeing a run after the news put that thought in the locals minds..
Don't you have a Commandment about putting other Gods before you? Is that squirrel with a young child's face a relative of that golden ram you were upset about a while back?

At least they're not making blood sacrifices to the Moon God. Cuz you know, when the Moon God starts eating the Sun, you have to appease him or be plunged into darkness for eternity. (side note: isn't it great how that superstition is designed for automatic success?)
Humanity has progressed since those days, although not much. People still have that "doom and gloom" reaction to phenomena like this. That's because deep down inside, we're all still cavemen. Human psychology takes a long time to evolve, much longer than our technology or culture. That's why we still have goofy superstitions in the digital age.

It really does, there's so much of our psychology that I even feel in myself that I have to control.
When I go on a cruise ship, or wait to board a plane, the instinct is to crowd the line or the entrance so you can MAKE SURE you're going to get your seat or get your food. But you have to be strong and just not crowd the entrance of the plane because... I've got a seat, and I packed a back pack which fits under the seat, so I don't give a damned. I could be the last person on the plane, nothing to worry about.
Same with the cruise ship, people go nuts. I never pile my food like some hoarding animal. But you see people that go ape **** and just don't have any shame. Eating is for sustenance. The only reason why it tastes good is so that we do it. If everything tasted like crap, we wouldn't do it and then we'd die.
But some people pile food on their plate to very literally make a mound... the amount that would otherwise fit on three or four plates. You can go up as many times as you want. The cruise ships WILL NOT run out of food. There will be plenty of bacon, and plenty of waffles... don't freak out people!
OK, this is getting silly. I just went to the FedEx website for some tracking info, and saw a "service alert" for the total eclipse. They're treating it like a natural disaster, or something.
FedEx is closely monitoring potential effects of the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017. Our first priority is the safety and well-being of our team members, and we will implement contingency plans as necessary. Events of this nature often cause pickup and delivery delays and disruptions for FedEx customers. FedEx is prepared to provide service to the best of its ability.
For more information on the total solar eclipse, visit the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. For more information on traffic conditions, visit the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.
Note that potential service disruptions may not affect FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, FedEx Office, etc. the same. This may result in different levels of impact as well as cities, states and ZIP Codes serviced.
Continue to check fedex.com for service updates. For specific shipment status information, please track your shipment at fedex.com. You can also contact FedEx Customer Service at 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339 or stay up to date by subscribing to FedEx Service Alert email notifications at the FedEx Email Subscription Center.
So umm... the delivery drivers might need to turn on their headlights for awhile?
I think the problem will be all the drivers gawking at the eclipse while doing 65MPH.
Also, how are the Smartphone contingent going to handle this. You know the people who haven't taken their eyes off the phones for more than a couple of minutes a day while they read about the Kardashians.
I'll bet there's a measurable % of the population that has no idea this is coming.
Ive seen on the news that $100 a nite hotel rooms are going for up to $1200 now, along with $1000 paper eclipse sunglasses.
I think im going to run an 'eclipse special ' paint job. Flat black from front to back, including wheels, windows, lites and all trim...for only $3500 till Friday only. Extra if you want the windshield and windows masked.
My understanding is that during the eclipse gravity is nullified. So, hang on to something........................... ------------------ Ron
