Maybe it's just that I'm getting older but these days, I want something quieter, not louder. One of the reasons I bought my Enclave was because it was whisper quiet. Double weather stripping on the doors, extra insulation on the body/floor, etc. I hear a little bit of tire noise but not much else. Makes it nice to get to my destination without a headache. Besides, who am I supposed to impress? If I want to impress someone, I'll buy the loudest Harley I can find and a full size pick up truck with a 16" lift and 49" tires (with an extra smoky diesel).
All the hot new cars have a sound tube going from engine to interior.. to bring in the engine noise.. And use the radio and a tach signal to make the exhaust sound louder in the car.. Here is an idea.. take the 500 lb of sound deadner out.. it'll be a win win.. you can hear the exhaust note and it'll make the car lighter..
Yeah, this is really lame. I knew the Mustang had it too, but I didn't know so many other manufacturers had it.
There is something just so inherently dishonest and cheesy about it.
If people want the sound, then Ford, GM, or whoever, should sell an aftermarket kit (or an option package on the car) that allows you to hear more of the engine. Cars are required to be built to certain noise standards because that's what they think people want. All the baffles in the intake tubes, the way the air box is designed, etc... if the customer doesn't want that, then just offer them the option of having an intake tube without sound baffles, and thinner insulation between the engine and passenger firewall.
