THIS IS JUST WEIRD, ALL AROUND

A day meant to venerate a hero of Newark's Latino community ended in shock and horror when an auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark was punched in the face during Mass at Newark's Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

The Most Reverend Manuel A. Cruz, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Newark, was offering opening prayers at a Saturday afternoon service commemorating the life of baseball great Roberto Clemente, remembered by Latinos in Newark, especially those from his native Puerto Rico, for his tragic death in a plane crash en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua in 1972.

The sanctity of the mass was shattered when a man wearing a white robe over a red suit shambled up to the altar from the crowd, reached Bishop Cruz and struck the 63-year-old in the face . . .

... several of the officers swarmed around a classic purple Cadillac Eldorado parked immediately in front of the cathedral. The car, which has a faux-zebra skin interior and New Jersey license plates, also has a residential parking permit for Foster Street, in Newark's South Ward . . .

"We're surprised and saddened by this, and we're very thankful that law enforcement was able to apprehend the assailant," said Jim Goodness, spokesman for the Newark Archdiocese. "Bishop Cruz is receiving excellent care."

Puerto Rican's are known for their "automotive flair" nothing about this surprises me except the target of the violence and the setting. Newark has a massive Puerto Rican community. They are known to be exceptionally proud people. Here in Chicago it's well known to stay away from certain neighborhoods on the northwest side. I've found most others of Latin American origin to look down on them. Puerto Rico itself is known to be exceptionally violent.

As much as I do not care for islam, sadly a Texas mosque was burnt down last night also. Nothing specific yet, but I strongly suspect arson will be the culprit.

Getting tough against an inanimate object, especially a church building, is probably one of the manliest things a person can do. *Obvious sarcasm.

using their normal postings, it should be A-OK for islam to have the same problem.. No?

Several other photos portray Miller wearing flashy suits, similar to the red-and-white one he donned on the day of the assault. A nearly 12-minute video he posted last September, apparently from the King Kennedy Projects in Cleveland, shows a black screen as Miller delivers another sermon. Although the recording itself is choppy and difficult to hear, at one point Miller clearly said, “Personally, I believe heaven is going to come to Earth.” Attempts to reach Miller’s relatives and fiancée were unsuccessful. Her Facebook page hosted content similar to that found on Miller’s. TAPInto Newark reached out to her place of employment. A person answering the phone said she is no longer employed there. Prosecutors may discuss Miller’s motive in court tomorrow, when he is set to be arraigned. The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Central Judicial Processing Court, on the fifth floor of Veterans Courthouse in Newark. Miller is expected to appear via a live video stream. He remains in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility, according to the prosecutor’s office.
