Sounds like you weren't around back then. Things are different and people don't need the same sort of support. While it wouldn't have been effective, at the time many ( most ) people didn't really understand the technology of what was going on, but they did understand being prepared and supporting your country, along with the president.
Today, people are more technically competent and know that it is ineffective to dig a hole. but then again 1/2 don't support the country, and neither does the president.
