The Wife has now got me researching her other choice, Nevada. Just wonder if anyone here has lived there, or got any family or friends there.
Maybe some of the "Outer-places".
Henderson seem pretty upbeat about their facts. I gotta say, though, the whole place looks like all desert to me. Still, if it is a nice, calm place to live, that won't matter, as long as there is some work to be had in the surrounding areas.
Anybody got any opinions about living & working in some of the places in Nevada besides Vegas (mostly only casino work there, i'm guessing)?IP: Logged |

Vegas was the fastest growing city in the country for quite awhile, just as Phoenix was during th '70s and '80s. Plenty of work during that time, however, over the last year or so, all bets are off (no pun intended).IP: Logged |

I almost moved to Vegas 2 years ago.......glad I didn't, but one day I think I will live there (I still have dreams of being a poker god ). Their economy has taken a bigger hit than most other states, so unless you already have a job lined up I would not recommend moving there. As for the desert thing.....the entire state is pretty much a desert.....you can't get away from that! The Vegas area is anything but calm......there are millions of people there and the streets are crowded and rush hour is a huge headache. Henderson might be a little better, but probably not much so. You could move to Tonopah....it's very relaxed and inexpensive, but very small too so job prospects are probably minimal as well. It's also in the middle of nowheresville.
I would say move to Jackson Hole like I did, but there isn't much here either and with all the millionaires it's too expensive for what you get anyway. House prices are absolutely insane around here.......average price is $1.2 million!
You may consider Colorado. Their economy isn't too bad and finding a good job may not be that tough. I'm partial to Colorado....I consider that home, so my opinion is a bit biased. They may be just as bad as anywhere else, but it is something to consider. Colroado Springs is a decent place to live as is the Denver metro area (most of it anyway). If you liek a slower pace then Ft. Collins/Loveland might be a good bet. I lived there for 5-6 years and loved it.
Anyway, good luck on your search.

If Vegas is out, I'd consider Nevada, for the most part, out. There isn't much to the state. All along I80 is empty desert with "dumpy" Western towns (Winnemucca...shudder). There are probably some good parts to Reno, but I've found it to be a nasty little gambling town for the most part. I've spent some sleepless nights in hotel rooms in Reno with my .40 at-the-ready by my side.IP: Logged |

Previous post, same subject: Planning to move to Las Vegas in the near future, suggestions?
I left some comments at the other link. I lived in Las Vegas for 5 years following AF discharge (4 years honorable) at Nellis AFB but that was a long time ago. More recently I lived in Sparks, Nevada for a couple of years so information about that experience is fresh if you have questions.IP: Logged |

I think I told you about my feelings of Reno. I spent only two days there visiting a friend and it was a very nice town. He showed me around and I was impressed but he was a local hero and everyone knew him. (He won the Distinguished Service Cross in Korea and passed away three years ago.)It is dry there but the natives are friendly. I could live there.IP: Logged |

Well there is Laughlin Nevada, its small town and has Casinos, its close to much larger Bullhead City AZ (Yes its actually a town with that name)
But the employment possibilities are slim to none there. My parents live there with my brothers and sisters.
Mojave Valley AZ does have a bowling alley though. It has 14 lanes. IP: Logged |

The Bullhead/ Laughlin/ Mojave area gets pretty warm in the summer. Bullhead once hit 126F, just two degrees behind the state record of 128 in Havasu and four degrees above Phoenix' record of 122. IP: Logged |

Well, I keep telling my wife that I got a feeling the job pickins' are probibly gonna be fairly limited. And the heat. Good lord, the heat.
Been studying up on Medford, Or. Not overly rainy & seems to have a somewhat vibrant economy. I also hear that Colorado is up & comming recently. Now, If I can just convince my wife that Colorado is NOT Alaska! I mean, it isn't, is it?
I better come up with something quick, as time is growing short for me to get this foolishness underway! [This message has been edited by Boondawg (edited 02-08-2010).] IP: Logged |

Boonie, don't come to Colorado Springs. Seriously. It isn't Alaska but it is snowy and gets cold in winter. Jobs pay next to nothing and business owners think $8 an hour is enough for skilled labor. The local hotelier bragged that he could run the city much cheaper than the present administration because he felt that no one is worth more than $24K a year. We are in a severe labor surplus here and businesses know it so pay is severely depressed. I couldn't afford to live here if I hadn't worked for the government and my pay kept pace with inflation
Denver pays a little better but it is a sprawling, sometimes violent city. There are a lot of cultural attractions and it is a bit less conservative than Colorado Springs so a differing political view won't land you in hot water with Focus on the Family.
Medford is a very nice town and the best Shakespearean theater in the world is nearby. Wage-wise, it isn't much better than Colorado Springs and housing is a bit expensive to buy. We are moving north of Roseburg when our house sells so we might be neighbors. If you check out Reno, stop on the way in Medford and check it out.IP: Logged |

Denver would also be that City that whenever I flew into it I was short of breath the entire time.
Just not enough oxygen for brain cells up there Boonie.

That seems to be the feeling I am getting researching it today.

What are those?
I think i seem to remember I had some of those in my younger days, but if I remember right, they always seemed to get in the way of all the fun stuff! So I cooked them on out of there. Really very freeing, actually.
I hardly miss them at all. Guess it don't take much of them, to be me!

Prostitution is legal in some counties but not in Washoe (Reno) or Clark (Las Vegas).

Yeah, not good. I imagine I am going to have to learn a whole new way of reconizing danger. "What's that big brown thing in the trees over there?" just ain't gonna cut it anymore.

I really love the desert southwest. San Angelo was actually known as Trans Pecos, meaning the region where Texas' geography/climate began to chang from green hill country to desert. A bit of both--with just enough rain to support a few trees--not so much it caused problems and there was so little humidity, that the heat was very tolerable. Always a wind blowing, usually from the SW except in winter. I lived there from 1995-2006 and it only snowed about 4 times and not too much even then. It was really a very difficult decision to build here, and I fought with an option to sell this place and move back there--and still do. I really really liked being able to see all the way into the next county, and watching a big thunderstorm from 30 miles off is an awsome experience--which we did about every 3 weeks in the spring. 3 lakes within 20 miles was an added plus as well, but the wages there really sucked, but then again COL was equally low. A nice 2 bedroom apt right next to the mall, Lowes, and walmart was about $400/mo. No mosquitos and we did a LOT of camping and fishing. I have an extreme hatred of trees. They just obscure the view, and fall on your house and anything else they can. I cut every tree down anywhere close to my yard and almost every one of them down in the pasture--and I ain't done yet.[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 02-09-2010).] IP: Logged |

You will need to get a doctors prescription for your medication (weed).
