I first worked on cars back in the early 70's... at that time, mostly big-block Chevys. It was a definite no-no to separate the stamped rocker from it's original fulcrum ball. That applied to
any engine which used that style of rocker. The ball and rocker rub against each other and establish a unique matching wear pattern. The rule was to always use both components
only with each other, or replace them both...
never just one or the other. I don't see how a 2.8 or 3.1 would be any different than a small or big block Chevy in this regard.
