The K swap is underway and has been going quite smooth but I have one issue, I don't know what to do about the shifter. I'm using a 5 spd RSX transmission and since my Fiero was previously an automatic, I don't have a manual shifter. I looked online and around my area for Fiero 5spd shifters and they are EXPENSIVE. I'd be able to buy 3 Honda shifters for the price of one fiero shifter. Also I'm a brokie so I don't like spending money I don't need to.

So my question is, if I were to buy a Honda shifter, how would I reverse it? could I just flip the shifter backwards had hope it works? or would I have to set up a linkage that reverses the cable. Do both cables need to be reversed or just one?

thx much

If you reversed the shifter your shifting pattern would also be reversed As for overall compatibility we have hardly, if even seen a Honda powertrain swap here. If this swap is real, (that I doubt), you are on your own.

the honda shifter wont work. believe me i tried.
i dont like my 5 speed throw so ive been trying to get a different shifter and couldnt find one that worked to my liking except a 4 speed shifter fiero shifter. it ended up not working out for some reasons.
you could try a honda accord h shifter. (the 91-93 models) that has a decent throw and is almost a straight bolt in and just needed a bellcrank to reverse the cable direction (nto worth it. get a custom stupid long cable and route it forward and then back to the engine bay or try a different bellcrank)
there is quite a few aftermarket shifters for a fiero if you look on ebay you might get lucky and find one.
i do still hsve that 4 speed short throw and might pick up another in a few months for our 2nd 84 manual swap

You need to start with a shifter that comes from a mid engine application so the cables will enter from the rear of the shifter.
Then you will also need to change how the cables approach the shifter - both the shift and select cables need to approach from the opposite side as well.

So when you swap a FWD transmission into a Fiero. It is best to stick with the fiero shifter, stick with fiero cables (you have Muncie, Isuzu and Getrag to pick from, then you can focus your efforts on fabricating the needed shifter bracket(s) for the transmission.

On this page about 1/4 the way down, I walk through the process of modifying a shifter to use use a Getrag Select cable for the shift cable and measure the range of motion needed at both ends.
https://www.fiero.nl/forum/...3/HTML/000123-7.html

That initial setup didn't work well due to the cable over extending and buckling, so I reworked the solution using an Isuzu shift cable for shift functions. Been 10 years and 61K miles and lots of abusive shifts and it works great. This R&D lead to me selling the F40 shifter kit for swaps.

i mean you could use a sequential style shifter? the direction would just be backwards which might be fine

Yeah ive seen his stuff, and most of his builds use the stock Fiero shifter. I might just go with the K series shifter and flip it backwards. Ill fab some linkages that reverse the direction of the cables. This will also benefit me since I wont need as long of shift cables. Ill do a little more research on this since I saw a guy do a K swap on an MR2 and he was able to just flip a stock RSX shifter around and have it work. Idk ill figure it out lmao.
