So I finally got to the point where I am fixing up my DD 88GT. I ordered a set of front KYB front shocks and rear struts and started on the driver side rear today. I got the driver side done, no problem. Went to the passenger side rear and this is where I screwed up.

I accidentally put the old top nut on the new KYB and went to tighten it up in the car. I met with some resistance, and soldiered on a little. Then, it stopped turning after turning very hard. I removed it and put the new nut on it, and when I went to crank down on it, it stopped well short again.

Long story short, I started stripping the threads on my new strut, damn!

I think I can save it without having to buy another new one, but I need to know the thread size on the end of the main shaft. Does anyone know? I would greatly appreciate it!

I wonder if it would be good to run a die down the threads to clean them up.
That size die is about $9 on Amazon if you already own a die handle.

I discovered this "gotcha" when I replaced my struts and installed coilovers. I forget which nut didn't work, but I had to pick and choose.
They seem to vary from one brand to another.

I ended up grinding does the messed up threads and got the KYB provided nut to catch and thread on fine. Crisis averted!! Whew!! I really don’t want to buy another strut!
