Greetings all

v6 stock. i ordered new set of valve spring from fierostore, they don't look like the original. Shields inside is different. Does it matter? Just put new one in or pull shields from the old and new ones and reinstall old shields into new springs?

Help will be greatly appretiated.
Thank you

The shields probably won't fit inside the new springs, anyway. But it's not a big deal. You can leave them out.

Knowing that GM would not put in a part that it could leave off and save 2 cents/car, what are the shields supposed to do? There's filtered air flowing through the valve covers, oil vapor, exhaust gas ... presumably these protect the valve stem seals??

Those are dampers.

They expand outwards and create friction with the spring's coils as they rub up and down.

The idea is to damp unwanted oscillations/movements of the middle coils.

Here we can see the middle coils of a valve spring moving around:

The damper and spring are made to work with each other, so I would use the GM damper with the GM spring, and your aftermarket damper with your aftermarket spring.

Thanks for explaining that and posting the cool video. It's quite amazing how much oscillation there is and I was especially interested to see how much the valve stem tip moves left-to-right as it gets to the top of its travel !!

Great video. I watched the whole thing expecting to see a valve drop and disappear into the cylinder.....
