Ok so here's my situation I have an 87 2.5L tech IV and 3spd auto trans but mine is fwd in an oldsmobile. I Know I'm in the wrong thread section but apparently the 87-88 Fieros are the other model GM blessed with the the particularly terrible vin U L68 block DIS tbi setup.
And previous owner swapped the ecm a couple times with ones he pulled at the junkyard and a ton of sensors chasing electrical issues and then parked it in the yard. He let the ecms he tried in the trunk and they all had different model numbers.

I literally bought it for a budget hobby racer. So none of the electrical is staying except for engine management. So I'm trying to figure out a "cheap" set up to start learning basic tuning. I'm leaning towards aldl because the obd1 2.5s are cheap and plentiful in my area. So I can source ecm hardware chips and blocks and heads to try out different setups. I also have an old free hp notebook laptop that I'm gonna factory reset it and set it up just for tuning. So I'm open any suggestions on operating systems programs.

Edit: im stripping every accessory and emissions off the engine so I'm open to racing tunes for the next motor and trans setup, but I just wanna keep this motor from going too rich and knocking itself apart.

Tunercat makes a software program for tuning earlier GM ECMs and has a definition file for the 87-88 Fiero 2.5L ECMs.
Any ECM prom chip can be tuned but you indicated that you want a race tune. I don't believe that you will be doing much racing with the Iron Duke. It is an economy engine made for low RPM use. An engine designed for 95 HP only does so much.

I've got Tunercat, and that particular definition file, as well as an 88 5 speed Duke. I'm not impressed. IIRC, there doesn't seem to be a lot that can be done with it.
Although the Fiero ECM is fairly advanced, and is one of the first to accommodate DIS, the stuff available to be tuned seems to be really limited.
(Although I do seem to remember the "timing bump" that is, I suppose, plugged in to accommodate the EGR. Other than that... meh.)
But it's been a while since I've been in there, so I could be mistaken, too.

I've got tuner pro rt myself I'm starting to do some data mapping. Right now I'm just trying to learn enough about this stuff to get the right hardware, and burn a new chip with as close as I can get to factory base tune. The one in it is currently blank. so it just runs in open loop. So I don't really have any steady baseline of numbers to start even trying to tune it for any power gains. I'm just trying to keep it from grenading before I get another motor. It goes from super rich at low rpms, and knocks. And dies if you give it too much throttle from a dead stop or approaching a hill too slow. Then it smooths out and runs great through the middle of it's rpm range. But it runs lean pings and stumbles sucking wind at wide open throttle.

I think I have a BIN for an '88 2.5L 5-spd. It would be a good starting point for your automatic. Let me know if you want it.
