I saw this Mercedes V8 muffler in a junkyard this week, the silver one. It's a 2 into 1 then goes to a resonator (I guess it's a resonator). It's pancake shaped and something like this would fit well between the stock trunk if it can flow backwards. What are the chances of a muffler flowing properly in reverse? Of course it could be used in the original direction for a single outlet.

Specs of the car: V-8 4196 cm3 / 256.1 cui engine size, 205 kW / 279 PS / 275 hp (SAE net) of power, 400 Nm / 295 lb-ft of torque.

It looks to have an air tube on it. Are you sure it isn't a cat?

Why not use the Flowmaster in the photo below? I believe it's used in Camaros. I use one on my 4.9, and it fits perfectly in the same space and flows in the correct direction....a single 2.5" in and dual 2.25" out? They're a dime a dozen, they flow well, and the sound is superb. Has a deep, muscular rumble (as opposed to that raspy howl that seems too common these days), has a thunder when you step hard on the loud pedal, but is perfectly quiet at cruise. Talking in the cabin is effortless, so is listening to the radio.

Remember though, I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate Flowmasters. Hate. Really, I hate them.

No, it's not a cat, its a hanger arm. On Rock Auto and other sites I checked before posting to make sure it's a muffler. The cats are way up stream at the engine, 2 of them. The E class is a bigger 4 door.

Ah. Okay. Sorry about that. Mea culpa.

To directly answer at least part of your question, I had a pair of mufflers on a V8 (350 with headers) Chevy Monza, a few years back.
Due to the configuration, and the limited space under the car, I had to run them "backwards". Worked just fine. Sounded amazing.

They must've been an offset setup then?

Fooling aside, I've got a 1 chamber muffler on my 4.5 that I've very sure is a Flowmaster. It's not terrible, but it wouldn't have been my choice. It's also not the reason I wouldn't choose FM. They just don't do it for me.

"I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate Flowmasters. Hate. Really, I hate them."

OK, so tell us why. Serious.

In the meantime I'm being fooled by how well my Flowmaster works, how well it sounds, how well it fits, how affordable it is and how durable it is.
