Hello all, My 4.9 in my 86 SE turned out to have no spark when I parked it at work, I had it towed back to the house for troubleshooting, I found it not firing on any cylinders. so instead of finding which component was not working in the distributor I choose to replace the whole thing from rockauto, the new one came with everything including the coil, how could I pass it up for 85 dollars, In my haste to install I forgot to mark where it went so after trial and error I was able to get it started and it idles ok, if you give it gas at idle it hesitates momentarily, when I try to drive it you have to baby it or it dies when you try to get on the gas pedal, while I was in there I noticed that the O2 sensor was smashed from a previously broken trans mount which was replaced about six months ago, so if I can get some ideas as to why im having the no power issue, can you have the distributor 180 out and it runs somewhat ok, or maybe a bad new distributor. I dont know im very frustrated with it right now, thanks for any help.
the engine is from a 91 deville

Make sure the new part is installed correctly before going crazy. "Trial and error" you can still be a tooth or so off.

From the 4.9 FSM... Ignition System 6D4-5

If Distributor position was lost:

  • remove no. 1 spark plug
  • place finger over no. 1 spark plug hole and crank engine slowly until compression is felt
  • align timing mark on pulley to 0 on engine timing indicator
  • turn rotor to point between no 1 and no 8 spark plug towers on distributor cap
  • install distributor and connect ignition feed wire
  • install distributor cap and spark plug wires
  • check engine timing

Remember, the 4.9 dizzy spins counter clockwise. I hear a lot of people forget that, as it's different than a traditional 350. but the firing order is still 18436572.

After removing my distributor for a manifold swap, I set mine with a timing light. It was dog slow.
I ended up setting it by ear. Added about ten degrees to what the timing light said was "correct".

It's possible that the ring on your balancer has slipped.

A dial indicator can be used to locate TDC. When the cylinder reaches compression set the dial indicator up and manually turn engine for the highest reading. Then check the harmonic balancer mark to see if it points to TDC. You could also get a rough reading by using an old distributor caps with the top cut off. Then you notch it for the #1 firing position. Line the rotor up to the #1 firing position. Now look at the balancer to see if it lines up with the TDC mark.
