Well, this just gets better and better. Driving the wife's '84 2.5 4-speed home from work today, it laid down on the road not 2 miles from home. No start since then. Turns over fine. Plenty of fuel from injector/s, but weak spark from coil wire to distributor cap. Need to check that wire's resistance, but also thinking I might be looking at a bad coil. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance - Chris
Update - coil tests good. Coil-to-cap wire was high resistance through one rusty terminal; swapped it for the one from my '86, still no spark. Thinking pickup or module now. Will bring home better meter tomorrow and test further.
Solved! Ignition pickup coil tested good. I have access to an ignition control module tester at my part-time job; the OE module had experienced a sudden catastrophic failure. Guess that can be expected with over 200k on the odometer... Replaced with an aftermarket unit, patched the wiring that our puppy had chewed to pieces overnight, and Voila! We have fire once again! Hope this helps anybody else who experiences the same problem. Til next time...- Chris
Noted. I have installed junk parts out of the box before, too. An AC Delco ICM was available, but had to be ordered. The house brand was on hand, and I had to be able to drive the car tomorrow. So, fingers crossed...
