All visible cables and linkages appear to be intact, shifter moves said cables and linkages when used. Nearly zero resistance when moving shifter around, clutch works fine and completely stuck in 4th. Must be internal to the trans, any thoughts on what could be broken?

once you figure out what trans you have...you might want to check out shifter rebuild lit, etc...replace worned bushings, etc..I had an similar problem with my 5 speed, and would get caught in gear , from time to time..I ordered kits from Rodney, and installed the replacement items...My troubles ended...

I suspect that one of the shift rails internal to the transmission has become detacted.
I've had it happen to me; all of a sudden, it doesn't shift anymore and the shifter, cables and levers move just fine.

My trans is a 4 speed manual from a 3.8L SE from 1986. Not sure what make the tranny is or how to identify it.

Not too keen on the idea of pulling the trans and having it rebuilt. Was hoping it could be easily fixed and not sent to a specialist if I did have to pull it.

So it's the Muncie, or also called the M17. You should be able to find another one for a reasonable price.

Same trans as my problem occurred with. Also in an 86 SE...

The Muncie shifter is rather simple. I think it is within the realm of a Saturday mechanic to open the trans and debug a shifter issue.

Once the bad parts are identified, they can be replaced with parts from a donor transmission, if applicable.

If after removing the shift fork the synchro is still stuck in gear, then dealing with that is a step up in difficulty; time for a pro.
