The 3800 engines last year was 2008 but the Supercharged version ended a year earlier. Like all engines I believe that GM decided that all iron engines had run their course. In came N/A V6 high value engines that had similar power as the supercharged 3800 and could be built for lower cost. Next came the next generation all aluminum VVT DOHC high feature engines that are used today.. Depending on the series those engines equal or greatly exceed the power of the 3800. Finally there is the ecotec 4.3L V6 used in GM trucks. The 3800 is no doubt a great high reliability engine, many like it, but it is considered low tech by today's standards.Until the high feature engines become easier to swap it may remain a Fiero favorite.

Early high feature engines had problems that gm walked away from by telling customers they needed a new engine after 120k miles.
9 thousand dollars for a new engine installed in your well equipped reasonably new SUV, or it's a parts car. To me GM'S new engines should be feared

sounds like GM went Backwards 3 DECADES ! from an engine that runs well to 300k to one that is done at 120k, almost as good as the "Constant Velocity Transmissions" ! ( nissan and ford), Absolute garbage)

One of the problems is the vvt which stretches the long timing chain as previously normal deposites build in the engine. GM actually extended the warranty to 120k from the typical 60k so that they could walk away from their crap at what could be considered a reasonable engine life expectancy. They just kept replacing the timing chains under the extended warranty because there is no fix for poor design.
At least that's what I've read online after dealing with this problem personally and researching the issue
