Question for anyone who has done the swap before.

I don't have the car running yet, but I connected my scanner to check out my wiring. My wiring looks good, but the transmission does the following:

When shifting from park, if you pull it down to the position where it automatically stops, my scanner reports D3, and if you bump it up one (to the other auto lock position) its D4. I can then psh the button, and can get to both neutral and reverse.

Is this just how the fiero shifter works with the 4t65, or can I adjust the cable so that the auto stop position is D4, and bumping up one position is neutral?

PRND321 is the shifting pattern. With the Fiero shifter it should lock when you reach D

The Fiero auto shifter has the needed detents to use with a 4 speed automatic.
4T60, 60E, and 65E all have the
PRND321 pattern.

In my swap (bought it done already), I can't seem to get into 1, just D, 3, 2 ... This is with a 4T65-E setup from a 1996 Grand Am.

That is due to either cable adjustment or the length of the arm on the trans shift shaft.

oleJoe,

When I press the button and come down to the lock should that be D4, and tap up should that be Neutral? If so I just need to make adjustments which should be fine.

I seem to remember cutting an extra detent in the 4T65E swaps that I did. I think the Fiero is missing the travel and detent for a 4 speed. I made a new shifter arm for the transmission for the extra travel. Now the shifter works exactly like an original 4 speed auto should.

I've done dozens of swaps, the Fiero shifter has all of the needed detents for the 4 speed automatics.
No shifter modifications are needed.
Transmission shift arm length is critical to matching the shifter detent positions to the transmission internal detents.
