Hi Can anyone recommend a good quality thermostat for my 87 gt - As mine would appear to be stuck open and not allowing the car to warm up unless it is stood in traffic for a while.

Many thanks in advance

I would stick with brand name (not sure what you have available over there). Stant brand is fine. Have you check to see if you have a thermostat in there? Go with 195F.

Thanks Jaskispyder - yes there is one in there I put it in myself a few years ago but the temp gage has never moved unless stuck in traffic so the car is running rich as proved when I looked at my spark plugs.

This subject is very well documented by the Ogre.

Look under: Powertrain/Cooling/Thermostat

You should check to make sure your temp gauge is working... (each check of the sensor ohms reading)

Have you taken the cap off and confirmed that it is not bent?

This could be the problem.

Bent Tstat is very often a problem w/ heater core or plumbing.
Tstat closed then most or all coolant flow is thru the heater loop.
Bad core etc can cause big headaches for most cars but Fiero and a few others can bend Tstat "handle" to release pressure from the Water pump.
Very common to screw up heater plumbing for engine swaps too.

You Could remove the thermostat and put it in Boiling water on the stove to see if it opens, then pull it out of the water (No, Not with your hand)LOL, and see if it Closes right away. ( should close in a couple of seconds if it's good) I always do that even with a Brand New thermostat. (Just because a part is NEW does not mean it's any good :-) )
