Ok I need some advice from the 4.9 guys. This isn't really Fiero related but I have a 91 Eldorado with a 4.9 and you guys know more and are a more reliable source than the cadi forums.
I need a new starter for my 4.9. I got the old one out but it is a super tight fit to remove without dropping the front exhaust and I'd rather not have to deal with that same fight putting a new one in if I don't have to, especially if I can end up with a better starter as an end result. I read a couple posts on here about people using the Alante gear reduction starters on their 4.9's. Is that a direct swap?
It's sort of fiero related because the cadi is my winter ride to keep my Fieros salt and rust free.

GM starter bolts are Dorman and likely other catalogs.

Pedro... I'm happy to help. The ebay starter looks just like mine. The wiring is a direct replacement. I may have had to extend one of the wires, or at least remove some of the wrapping, but it wasn't a big deal. Otherwise it bolts right up. Weighs less than half of what the original starter weighs. Mine has been in the car for quite a few years. No problems whatsoever.
I get starters and alternators at AZ w/ lifetime warranty and good at any locations. As long as you remember phone # at time of sale, Warranty will be honored very easy. I've return a 10+ year old starter under AZ warranty.
Heat shield is easy. Any sheet metal can be used to make them. Just make sure new shield can't cut cable insulation etc. The battery can easily dump 200+ amps into a short circuit.

I quit buying anything electrical from autozone. When they warranty out a failed part and give you a refurbished one, they only fix what has failed in that alternator or starter. Sure, they'll replace it but my time and hassle is worth something too and I'd like for my vehicle to be more reliable than that.
