After reading through the archives I'm a bit confused about the trunk release set up. The car is a 85 GT V6 with 4 speed..... I have the trunk release button on the dash and wiring on the trunk lid but cannot find where the trunk lid wiring plugs into the wiring harness coming through the firewall.....I (have not) torn into the wiring harness yet to see if someone snipped the connector off. I have another 85 GT so I took a look at it for a reference and I can see the wires coming down from the trunk lid and they connect to the wiring harness below that's coming through the firewall.
My question is.......did all cars with the button and wiring in the trunk, factory installed, have the appropriate wiring harness to use this function? Should I suspect someone snipped my connector from the harness?
------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)
I appreciate the input from both of you.....will be able to work on the car again this Sunday...in the meantime,I will do some reading in the cave and through my manual to locate the c500 connector.
Okay,I looked at the pic but I'm not quite sure what I'm suppose to be looking for. I haven't had time to read up in The Cave yet...
Here's what I have on this car.....I have the dash button and the 3 or 4 pin connector coming down from the deck lid.....but I can't find a connector in the main wiring harness to plug it into. I looked at my other 85 and it has the 3 or 4 pin connector coming down from the deck lid, just like this car ,but it also has a connection in the main harness that comes through the firewall to plug into. The car I'm working on doesn't have the connector in the main wiring harness. Wondering if someone snipped the connector off? I'm not around my car at the moment but can look at it when I get home tomorrow....
My 85 Se notchie has a single pin connector by the drivers side hinge. You only need one wire because the release earths through the latch itself I believe.
------------------ Anything I might say is probably worth what you paid for it, so treat it accordingly!
I just looked at my hook up and the power wire for the trunk release comes out of the wire bundle that is a sub set (branch bundle) that the air cleaner MAP sensor is a member of. in the photo below you can see the plug connector and the wire with the blade connector exposed. That is the truck release circuit.
This is what I have on the deck lid of the car.... I'm pretty sure this is not a solenoid for popping the latch...is this just a switch to shut off the door ajar light? Still cant find a spot on the main harness to plug this into.
This is what I have on my other 85...now this is the solenoid, correct? It has a very simple ground wire running from the left side down to the hinge and another wire running to the wiring harness on the right.
This is the wires from the deck lid to the harness on my 88....it connects.
Why does the 85 that I'm working on have the 4 pronged connector running from the deck lid, like the 88, but no connector on the main harness? Is this deck lid from a different year car? Is the deck lid not being plugged in causing my door ajar light to stay on?
Yes... I have time to look at 85 book now. 85 does not use 3-4 wire hardness or switch on lid. You have 86-88 lid w/o power trunk release.
85 Ajar light switch is someplace on trunk wall. Uses same jam switch as car doors.
84-85 trunk popper is 1 wire to 1 wire at hinge (C402) then to C500. 85 C500 pin A1 (auto trans. car side black wire, C402 to C500 blk/wht wire) or H8 (Manual trans. All black wires)
"It has a very simple ground wire running from the left side down to the hinge and another wire running to the wiring harness on the right." Wrong. Solenoid's Wire is power and ground thru the latch loop when lid is closed. Ground wire is only for metal "shield" to stop/reduce EMI.

You're right.....there is a jam switch on the trunk bulkhead....I know it works because it turns my trunk light on and off when pushed and released.
So what in the world is the square switch on the deck lid release?....does that take the place of the jam switch on later years? I would assume that I either have the deck lid from a different year or that someone replaced the assembly at one time.

That switch also turns the trunk light off if it's a factory installation and if there's a light there... That's how my '88 Formula works as factory supplied, and my '86 coupe that I installed a trunk light and solenoid in. The solenoid is a galvanized cylinder on the other side of the latch as you've noted on your pic of your other '85.

Again... You have 8687-88 lid w/o power trunk release. (because has 87-88 belt map below the latch) Black thing on latch replace the jam switch and have 3 wires to C402. Missing wire is power trunk when have that option.

Just wanted to make a correction or production point. I tried to replace my door jam switches with the truck/hood switched indicated by the The Fiero Store (not making a bash) they were not the same.... Shucks Auto had the correct door switches ACDelco 20555200 D6029. My '85 has a 15mm switch while the hood and trunk are the 8mm as stated by theogre
1985 Pontiac Fiero 2.8L V6 Gas OHV Door Jamb Switch 1984-85 Pontiac Fiero 2.5L l4 Gas OHV 'Door Jamb Switch
You stated your "Ajar"" light stayed on all the time? 4 switches. Hood, Trunk, L & R doors.
