Hey guys, got an interesting (at least to me) problem. It's an 87 v6 5-speed with about 70k miles.

Heard a loud thud, then a clunk on each rotation of the wheel as I limped home the car. Pulled the engine, opened it up and saw this. Any ideas? Had a similar issue in 1989, except after the thud the car drove fine and there was a little oil leakage. The dealership said they replaced the transmission but I'm wondering now if that was a lie.

I intend on replacing the transmission but I'd feel better about it if I knew that this was a one time incident and not a normal issue with these tranmissions.

Thanks guys.

Not like that. I have chewed up a few transmissions racing, but usually from the outside in. I have had similar cracks in the outside case from stress of hitting walls and other cars.

I've had several Getrags, and fragged one.
I've never seen one break like that. Mine, or anyone else's.

I have seen pics like that on this Forum, but not for several years.
Torque forces the shaft on the other side of that boss toward the engine. Too much torque will eventually cause a failure like that.
What engine are you using?

Not exactly the same (4spd Isuzu and the result of driver error) but I have seen something similar:

The result of driving too fast in the rain. Leaked an insane amount of oil.
