Hi ....... I have a question about the Fiero EGR Solenoid that I hope someone on this forum can help me with. My wife has an 86 Fiero that was not idling properly, would not start when hot, and a few other things, so she took it to a very highly recommended mechanic to check it out. He had the car for two weeks, and when it came out I noticed that it had new plugs and wires, a new alternator, and a new battery ground strap, but the EGR Solenoid was disconnected, and tied up out of the way with a zip tie. The car ran ok for a day, but now it`s worse then it was before. I asked him about the solenoid, but he said it didn't matter because it was just for emissions and would not affect the overall performance of the car. Now I admit that I know next to nothing about Fieros, but I have a bit of a problem believing that. If someone here can give me the facts about that, I would deeply appreciate it. Her mechanic said to bring it back in, but since I`ve already paid him $940, I'm a little hesitant to do that. Hope someone can help me out on this soon and .......... Thanks in advance.

Report him to the feds. He tampered with emissions controls AND took you for a ride. A tune up? 900+? Dang!

Seriously, if the egr system is not working properly, the car will run lean at part throttle and eventually ruin the pistons through detonation and heat. The egr introduces unburnt gasses back into the intake, which makes the mixture richer, whereas the ecm fuel tables take the fuel away to compensate.

Tell him to fix it right, assuming he disabled the solenoid, and threaten to turn him in if he doesn't.

You shouldn't have to pay a penny more. He got you already.

The ERG solenoid controls vacuum. You could have a vacuum leak that your MAP sensor is trying to compensate for which would cause the motor to get worse over time.

On a note The EGR solonoid shouldn't be disconnected because it will cause you motor to run lean and you will loose MPG if not properly working.

Try this...
Disconnect the battery for 10 minuets to let the computer reset, reconnect it and try to start it. Does it start right up like normal? If it does you know you have a problem with vacuum. The computer relies on the vacuum to tell how much fuel to inject into the motor.

When it starts see if you can hear a high pitched whistle sound.

As for being take for a ride... you definitely got ripped off. Just throwing parts at the problem (which is what it sounds like) is not the way you should go about it.
As for the EGR being deleted... it is illegal to remove it, at least in the states... don't know about Canada. I don't know what you mean by ruin the pistons... The egr being removed is not going to harm the pistons.

Thanks for the replies guys. Like I said, I don't know much about Fieros, but this didn't look right, even to me. Can you believe that this guy actually won "mechanic of the year" award in this area? After looking at this I'm starting to wonder if he won it because he was so good, or because everyone else was so bad. I think it's time to go have a little "chat" with this guy. Thanks again guys ............ have a good day.

The fiero is an automotive oddity. Not a lot of mechanics know how to work on them anymore.

Best of luck with your 'chat', keep us updated.

Not a lot of mechanics, but a lot of Canadians......you should be able to find someone near you that monitors this website and can help.
