I sometimes use Bosch filters but sometimes I use Wix . Why is it that the Wix filter is much longer in length than the Bosch? (This is for an 86 GT) The correct Bosch number is 3331 while the Wix is 36015.
So, they don't have to be the same length regardless of brand?

Both brands probably make both sizes. Those little filters were popular in the 80s....but larger filters have advantages too, so many people have switched to them.

Are you sure you have that WIX number right?

Sorry, I was going by memory. The correct Wix number is 51036, not 36015.
I did notice that the Bosch filter, though much shorter is much denser & heavier than the much longer Wix.

The Bosch 3430 will be the same size as the wix 51036. (according to that cross reference page)

There is a very good thread here on PFF about what's inside the different brands. There are a lot of differences in filter construction.

"Correct" filter for V6 is GM/ACDelco PF47, the smaller one.
Other brands make both or only make the longer size one.

I've always used the longer AC Delco PF-52 filters. They have the same pattern as the PF-47 but have more filter medium. I believe that they are directly interchangeable. It should be noted that not all oil filters are alike. Some brands use longer more dense filter mediums. I read an article a while back and it gave some good info; http://www.austincc.edu/wkibbe/oilfilterstudy.htm

Cannot recommend using the PF52 any more.

The Wix 51036 is a good replacement. I cut apart several Fiero specific filters, and Wix was by far the best.

Another good comparison

The new AC Delco is their "E-core" filter.

I just use the old ones. Still available, at least around here.

Longer filter is easier to get on and off.
