Not. Is there any way to test a tranny off of an engine and out of a car ?

You can put it in gear and spin the input shaft. Most likely will have little if any oil in it, but you will be able to go through 1-4+R and see if it feels like any of the gears feel bad. If there is a noise/feel in all gears may be a bearing or differential gear.

Is the unit an '84 2.5L unit or one of the units from a V6 with the stronger case with the webbing all over the outside?

It is the 2.8 v6 with webbing on the case.
