Couple of questions on the stock VSS sensor. Engine is a Ecotec 2.4 LE5 VVT, transaxle is an F40, the SAAB version with the Ecotec bolt pattern case. I have the transaxle apart, it has no stock provision for a VSS, and no real easy place to install one., so the jack shaft looks quite a bit easier. ECM has no provision for a VSS signal - aftermarket unit. First question - I am aware that the stock VSS outputs a sine wave - assume then that it is self generating. I also assume that it crosses zero, and is generated by a magnet passing a pickup coil. Anyone had one apart - could I harvest the coil, and machine a suitable magnet holder, with an appropriate number of poles (2000ppm). On second thoughts, I would need about 2.48 magnets for 2000ppm. I suppose use 5 magnets, and divide by two? Anybody know if the stock system will accept a square wave as long as it crosses zero?. Seem to recall someone did something like this to generate 4000 ppm, but really not sure on generating a stock signal. Suppose I could mount the stock drive gear on the jackshaft, shielding the gear might be a little tough.
Any thoughts? I have searched a few threads, but most are aimed at providing the 4000 ppm signal. Wasn't real keen on using the Dakota Digital.
