Hi all. My Formula engine is done, and I dont want to put money into it as I have found it pretty easy to find low mile S2 3800 and 3800SC motors.

So, aside from the engine, harness and ECM; what is the major cost of the swap?? I will be doing all the labor at my place, so no labor cost....

I can only guess that engine mounts, and the proper fuel pump would be the most???

That's probably about the least.. Exhaust and clutch (if manual) are going to be the most.

Ok, thanks. Mitch, I should have done this when I lived in Mountain Home.... could have picked your brain more!!

As for the wire harness, I thought it could be built relatively inexpensive?

Parts cost is $1000-2000 including the harness and ecm if you don't want custom headers, not including the engine itself of course.
All depends on where/whom you purchase parts from.

Fieroflyer has the best price for a plug-n-play harness with computer included.

I bought a 1997 Riviera (drivable), for $700, sold the wheels and tires for $300, removed the engine/trans/wiring and "scrapped the Body" for another $350 ! ( But I did, for my own "peace of mind" rebuild Everything.) ALL NEW, No Mystery (Have plenty of free Time). then the Wire harness, (GMTUNERS) Build it yourself Cost about $25 (solder, shrink tube, ends). Mounts, about $200, use 1 or both your existing axles depending on the trans you use,( I rebuilt the 4t65e-HD). The Exhaust (doing it yourself) will run you about $150. (I used a '95 firebird stock muffler) 2 1/2" mandrel bent pipes, clamps/hangers, with stainless rectangular tips.(You're going to have to clip the bottom off your trunk no matter what you use (I cut off about 6", so I still have my trunk) redoing the ECM $150. I kept mine Stock, even WITH Power steering And Air cond. all in all I Could have spent $1000 total on the whole thing (inc Paint and cleaners), but it cost about another $900 in Parts because I Rebuilt the Entire Engine and Trans. (New is Good) LOL Plan on ALOT of time ! I got a spare cradle and built it ALL to just "slip it in". Rebuild your suspension at that time also (Coil overs, because you KNOW you will want Big tires.) You can always re-sell a spare cradle.

at most u-pull yards you can get one for $150-175 better off buying a RUNNING entire Car, engine/trans/wires/ecm. or you might get a 150-175 boat anchor

Lou, what you are talking about is pretty much my plan. I work at AutoZone and one of my commercial accounts, gets wrecked 3800 + 3800SC cars every week. Now that the motor in my Formula is shot, I will be picking up a wrecked car (Grand Prix/Buick) part it out then scrap the rest.

Thank you for the info!! I have not decided on the trans yet. My original 5 speed is in decent shape, but the auto would probably take the power better....

If I dont go SC, the 5 speed should be ok, right??

The 5 speed will be fine either way...if its a getrag. You need to make sure you have good mounts though otherwise this will happen.
