hello,

what is the thin plastic backing with all of the electronics on the behind the gauge cluster called? its what the harnesses plug into. mine is damaged and i need to replace this part. thanks!

It's a flexible printed circuit, though I've heard it called other things as well.

It would probably be easier to just get a cluster from somewhere as opposed to replacing the flexible circuit board back there, that way it's just plug and play with no fooling around...

Save yourself some money. Go to the bone yard and pull a cluster. Carefully remove the film circuit from behind the cluster. It's real easy and you wont have to buy a more than what you need,,,. a child could do it!
Now for the most important part. Put the cluster back just the way you found it and connect all the plugs. Don't leave any clues behind that it was ever removed and nobody will ever know. :
