Do any of you that know the 3800 series 2 engines well think my engine is healthy or not? the oil was not milky or butterscotch colored, and there was no metal flakes in the oil. This is a salvage yard engine the guy said it ran "great" with 48,000 miles on it.

Way I tell if I got a good one is to check the compression of each cylinder. Compression gauge is pretty cheap of you dont have one

as far as sludge, it's fine. But mine looked like that at 170K. screw an oil pressure gauge onto where the sender screws on, remove all the spark plugs, spin it over with the starter and see what pressure it holds. compression check while the plugs are out.
