Last night my 2.8 developed a bottom end knock. I have a low mile 3100sfi in my garage but I need to be able to do the swap in a weekend because it is my daily driver for work. I need to know if my 88 2.8 intake and heads(if need be) could ho on the 3100 block to make for an easy swap.

so my questions are:
can it work?
do I have to swap heads because if guess the 3100s flow more?
other than gaskets what would I need?
anything else I need to know?

I'm very familiar with the car and tools and mechanical ability aren't my worry. I just am not a 60 degree v6 expert.

thanks a lot,

Your heads would bolt on but your compression will be quite off.

To do it right, you'll need a set of pistons and rings from an iron head 3.1 (like the '90-92 F-body). Because the iron heads, combined with the 3100 pistons, will yield a ridiculously low compression ratio.

Also, if you keep the 3100's roller cam, you'll need custom length pushrods.

You'll also need to use a neutral-balance flywheel / flexplate on the 3100. You can use the one that came with the 3100, or one from an '88 Fiero V6.

Why would you want to reduce the output of the 3100 like that? Putting the inferior Fiero heads on it will strangle the poor thing. Just use the 3100 complete and work around fitment issues.

The swap would be a big deal other than time. I found a 3.4 with 87000 on it in waiting to hear back on and I found a 2.8 with 99000 so time will tell I'd like to do the 3.4 for the mileage and obvious displacement upgrade but we will see once I have more info.
