Hi Guys, new here. I recently retired and bought a 85 GT to use as a project car, someting to do with my time. Have not gotten started on it yet, still waiting on manuals but wanting opinion on where to start. I know that it has an issue with engine dying for no reason, runs great for sometimes several days then just dies....stone dead...., engine stops, engine light comes on, tow truck usually gets called. Sometimes it will re-fire after a few min, sometimes it will start in a few days "if" it wants too. Not sure where to start. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum!

There is a long history of 2.8 engines going dead to the surprise of the owner. It often has to do with the ignition system. If you had not worked with the SEARCH function, give it a try and look for information on the ICM, or Ignition Control Module. If you don't find what you need, post some questions on this thread and I suspect Phonedawgz will be much more helpful.

Welcome to the forum. When I joined late last year I did a lot of searches on various things and that helped me a lot. I have never seen a more helpful bunch of people than the people on this forum. Like Gall said become familiar with the search function, it will help you a lot.

Hey getting a tow home is expensive. Even at the worst case you could still push a car home if it is on the other side of the block.

When the trouble happens look at the tach. Does it rise to 200 RPM during cranking and then fall back to zero?

I'd replace the pick up coil before the ICM. You could always just replace both.

Thanks for the info guys, everything I have seen and from what you guys have told me it all points to the pickup coil and or the ICM. Heading to AutoZone tomorrow as soon as I get them off to have checked and replaced if necessary. Thank everyone for the advice, i'm sure you will be hearing more from me in the near future. I bought this car off a friend at work who was hurting for cash knowing it had some problems needing to be addressed and thought I could just play with it now that I have extra time. Again, thank you so much for the advice.
