2.8 v6 stock engine In an 85 gt. when driving it hard the engine will completely cut out for a second and then be ok. Any ideas? No check engine light, when giving it half the gas but letting it rev up its fine. I'm sure it could use a tune up but I can't even get the wire boots off the plugs, I will have to cut them off and remove and change the plugs and then change the wires, cap and rotor. Ill also be installing a msd blaster coil. Hope that resolves it. Any other ideas? It happens at about 4000 rpm ------------------ ===Always trying to find time to work on cars=== Louis Duet Baldwin, Long Island, NY Where driving hard is SOP. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Blue" <= '85 Fiero GT Stock V6---Stock everything. Also, it is right that my power band seems to come in at 3000-3200 rpm? Thanks.

The original Fiero connectors to the ICM at the base of the distributor had latches to keep them secure. Many have broken....resulting in loose connectors. WD 40 would be a good thing to use there, and make sure everything is tight.
I inspected the two connectors at the bottom of the distributor and they look attached tightly. Don't know where to turn next.

Engine running start wiggling and knocking on the electrical parts of your ignition system. Knock the distributor with a screw driver handle. Knock around the ignition coil. Knock the ECM reset connector near C500. Wiggle the power wires located under C500.
Sorry for the ignorance here but what is c500? I will try these wiggling tricks though.

Weird thing is that when I over bumpy rough roads it doesn't affect it, no cutting out. It's just disappointing and I surely don't want it to die and get stranded.

And today it cut out our times under normal acceleration, I wasn't even getting on it. It's a silent type of cutting out, so I think it's ignition not fuel related. On the way home from work it ran fine with no cutting out. Very puzzled. This is all new too, I've driven it like 200-300 miles before it ever cut out once and now it's randomly happening every day.

I was getting a weird buzzing sound that was coming from either behind my seat or the ECM box for a few days and now that doesn't happen but the engine is cutting out randomly. So strange.

When the engine cuts out does the tach drop to zero right away while the engine is still turning over?
Ill have to keep an eye on the tach when the cutting out happens, but from what I remember the positive battery cable just goes down behind the back of the engine and the neg black cable is attached to the dog bone bracket.
Ill have to look again around the battery, but its supposed to rain the next three days and I have no garage so that may delay things a bit.

Is that your battery? Wow! Looks like a scooter battery. Or is that a hookup for a front trunk mounted battery? Ill have to heck that c500 box, thanks for the pic. That's in an 85?

The car hasn't cut out lately so I haven't been able to see the tach involvement. I took out the center console ecu cover to see if there were any bad connections and I noticed that there was a large plug with only four terminals used in it that wasn't plugged into anything. But I also couldn't find a place to plug it in. The color of the wires into it are light purple with white stripe, black with white tire, orange and a peach or white. It's a large rectangle connector with only four terminals in it. Any ideas? Plugs going into ECM look ok.

Does it cut out around corners? How much gas is in the tank?
No but it does spin the tire when making right turns, I guess the right back wheel is the main drive wheel.
Full tank.
Man I wish it was that easy. It cuts out driving straight, or at least it WAS cutting out driving straight, I think it has to be warmed up too. Doesn't cut out going to work, or returning to work. Didn't cut out going to the post office, (car sat for a few hours before going) but did on the way back the other day.

No it is not. It is just much easier to google up a pic of someone's C500 than it is to get my lazy butt off of the couch and take a pic of one.
When inspecting my ECM in the center console, it had this sticker on it that reads
Serv. no. 1226869 FIY 869052 M521546062
Does that sound right for an 85 GT v6? Thanks , I now nothing about these cars.

I think I may have found out what's causing this. The valve right above the IAC kills the engine when I touch the wires going Into it. What valve is that? Is it possible to get a new valve and connector for it ? When the engine is not at temp where the rad fan runs, moving the wires on that sensor cause the engine to idle higher temporarily , but once the rad fan is running , moving that wire kills the engine or makes it cut out. Its very touchy though and doesn't always do it. While revving the engine it does make it bog down which is like the cutting out I'm experiencing while driving. Please post any info you have! I wiggled the c500 wire and it really didnt make a difference . I changed the cap and rotor but that didnt change anything although the old cap and rotor didnt look great. This is the only thing that I see affecting the engine. Please advise.

It is running very rich too, my shirt stinks of fumes from standing by it while it was running. Could that be the mixture valve?

Throttle Position Sensor. The ECM uses it to know when to add fuel when you are popping open the throttle. When they wear out they many times report throttle movement that isn't there and the ECM adds extra fuel, It isn't used much for calculating how much fuel to inject other than rapid throttle movement or to know that the throttle is closed and the ECM should control idle speed.
If the sensor itself is what is causing the idle to jump around replace it. It might also be the wiring to the sensor.
Is there anyway to know if its the connector or the actual part. It does change things when I wiggle the wires going into it, even causes the engine to stall out, but I can't tell if its the connector wires or maybe the connections inside the actual sensor. Connector is $12 sensor is $60

Would it cause the engine to stall right out at idle? Or even cut out while accelerating slowly? I wish I knew if it was the connector wiring or the sensor itself. If I disconnect the plug, the engine runs ok but idles higher and the check engine light illuminates. Then the light goes off when I plug it back in. Sometimes wiggling the wires doesn't affect it, other times even the slightest touch and then engine will stall right out. Phonedawgz, I will try to email you a video of it causing the stalling if your email is registered here . If not, PM me your email. I just know if its not the sensor and I buy one at autozone , they will not allow me to return it because its an electrical component.

Ok I ordered the tps and the connector from autozone and it should be in my local store by 11am tomorrow. They said to try the connector first and if that solves the problem to return the sensor before I install it. Another $75 sunk into this shabby engine I have. Oh well, I hope it solves the cutting out issue.

Sure looks like that is going to be the cause of the problem. You can strip back the insulation and wiggle the wires indivually and perhaps see which one it is. You are going to have to strip back the wire loom/thermal insulation anyways to get back to splice the wires.

Could a faulty tps sensor make the engine run rich and have super fumey exhaust? My clothes stink from revving it up in my driveway while testing it.

Changed the tps and the iac today and the car runs a lot smoother (I think that's the tps) and it idles much better (iac) , it doesn't cut out or stall now when I wiggle the tps connector either. I didn't change the connector because no one locally had it in stock and now I'm thinking I may not have to. Hopefully this is "problem solved". I will update this if it cuts out on me again. Thanks to all and a special thanks to phonedawgz who put up with my constant emailing. This forum is awesome, and unlike the Delorean forums, people are very nice and respectful to everyone. Love it here !
