I have just inherited an 88 Fiero with a 3.4 conversion. Each time the starter is engaged there is a terrible grinding sound. It sounds like a misalignment of the starter to the flywheel. I have replaced the starter which had a crack across the Bendix housing and have attempted to shim the starter starting from no shims all the way to the point of no engagement. The teeth seem to be ok on the flywheel. Could it be possible the holes were drilled incorrectly in the block when the starter was relocated to the other side of the block? Any suggestions?
I would have to say yes, the holes are probably off by just enough to cause engagement problems. The other possibility is it could be the wrong flywheel but I doubt that Is the case
What does the starter drive look like? It may be engaging to far in or out. If you could post some pics of the old drive it would help with diagnosing the problem.
