So I am trying to run down my poor gas mileage on my 3800na swap... So I pulled my exhaust off to check for holes and the gasket fell out. This thing is pretty shot. Looks like it is melted pretty bad.

I picked up an OEM replacement and realized that one side has what looks like mesh, the other side is a ring. Which side goes to the manifold?

Isn't it strange that after a bombing, everyone blames the bomber, his upbringing, his environment, his culture, his mental state but … after a shooting, the problem is the gun?

I can't say for certain, since I'm not too familiar with this particular application, but typically the steel/ring side goes toward the head, and the mesh/fiber side will go toward the manifold to allow for minor imperfections in the casting surface.

I think I installed it with the mesh facing the exhaust pipe not facing towards the engine.

The mesh part should go against the manifold it is completly flat. and the "ribbed" side to the downpipe. It should ever so slightly fit into the dp hole allowing it to seal all the way around it.
