Did you check your fluid level? My 86 started doing the same thing not going into first gear. The master cylinder was leaking. Replaced the master cylinder bled the clutch no more problem.

Yes it could be a master cyl,but the main shifting culprit is always the Fiero clutch slave cylinder, you can try V8 archie bleed process to restore some push,, just go to V8 archie site replace the slave cylinder single seal piston with a dual seal piston,,order one from Rodney Dickman no matter what the problem is ,because the slave clylinder is a notorious Fiero weak spot the slave piston seal is about $20.oo inspect the old slave cyl. for imperfections & pits ,you can hone it lightly with a rag with wet sand paper around it . as most people do not have a small hone,,a brake hone cost about $18 to $25 the dual seal piston will over come minor imperfections that the single seal piston will not every Fiero should have a dual seal clutch slave piston ,,or replace with one of Rodney Dickman new clutch slave cylinder
thx for the many replies, yes checked linkage ,shiftlever, select lever pulled back the carpet to check for a leak on the rear side of the MC, it was ok, slave ok, i did find a small leak where the resviour meets the cylinder there is a small "o" ring there, its a 2nd design the black plastic one. darn thing is held on with a cable tie,"unbelivable",so i ordered both MC and slave in aluminum, great help thx
