I went to install the EGR delete chip into the ECM and found something other than what I was expecting. I bought Phonedawgs conversion chip to fit my 85 SE 2.8 auto's ECM and was under the impression that mine wouldn't have a plastic carrier on the chip but this one does, I thought that was 86 and later chips. What am I looking at here and will my brand new chip work in this ECM?

Phonedawgz is the man for this answer. You might send him a PM.

I've found this which states that the 1226869 is the 1985 ECM but the plastic piece on the chip is throwing me off. Is the plastic clip on the chip common?

I know it was common for 1227170 but the tutorial led me to believe the 85 2.8 1226869 didn't come with one.

I don't know the answer to that, but after 25 years it's hard to determine what has not been altered.

I thought all 6869 ECMs had just pin sockets. It is possible to remove the carrier from the old chip and put it on the new one however most people destroy the original chip in the process.

I will send you a new carrier. Please be careful when installing the chip into the carrier to make sure the notch in the chip lines up with the notch in the carrier.

I got the chip out without any problems and put the new chip into the old carrier, very easy and the trick is to go slow and pay attention. Got the notch pointing in the correct direction in the carrier and will be sure to make sure it's pointing towards the passenger side when it goes back in.

So the carrier in a 1226869 is not that common after all, that's why I decided to ask questions first before goofing anything up!

Update: I just installed it, piece of cake with a carrier! I'll put the rest of it back together tomorrow and see what happens when I hit the key.
