The car idles fine, and it drives down the road fine, but when I try to accelerate, it surges, pops, backfires and lurches hard. If I floor it it gets worse, even if I shift down for a lower gear. It takes a long time at full throttle to get the car up to the speed limit and it feels like something is going to break with the motor slamming around like it does, but once I make the speed limit the car will run fine. What is this thing doing? It seems to clear when it warms up or drys out, not sure which.

I have a 1987 Fiero, 4 cylinder 5 speed. With an 88 engine.

Any codes?
Check your plugs and wires. If those look good, check your coil packs. I had one that was cracked. Only acted up in wet weather.

Yes, definitely check your wires. Mine did this. Come to find out, #2 or #3 wire got fried on the exhaust manifold hiding behind the air cleaner. But looking at the wires you couldn't tell.

Good luck!!!
