Changing the head gaskets on my 3.8 v6 and am wondering what torque the head bolts need to go on at, and what pattern do I torque them down in?

Thanks,
-Zach

Start middle bolts and work outward, 37 ft lbs to all, then + 120 deg to all. It's a two step torque spec.

My apologies it is for a 3.4 V6 not a 3.8. a typo on my part, is it the same pattern and torque for that engine as well?

Thanks for the welcome!

And just to make sure I'm going to get this right I start in the middle of the heads and giving them each 37 ft lbs until all are tight
Then I go back in the same pattern as before and turn each bolt an extra 120° of rotation?

Not according to the link that Gall757 posted. Follow the order shown in the little numbering sequence like this:

*Manifold Side*

6 2 3 7

5 1 4 8

* Outer Side *

...and tighten all of them to 41 lbft, then return for a second pass tightening them a further 90 degrees rotation in the same sequence:

The correct numbers for the 3.4 are 41ft/lbs and 90 degrees. Those other numbers belong to the 3.8 (37ft/lbs and 120 degrees). It sounds to me like the bolts all end up just about the same....but you never know.

I torqued the heads down at 41 and then I went back put the extra 90° on it and it equated to something around 150 foot pounds... That seems like a lot or is it normal
