Due to my age and eyesight restrictions, I very rarely drive my 87GT at night. Isn't there a light under the signage for the various gears? I ask simply because I don't want to have to take the assembly apart to replace a lamp if I don't need to.

Yup, there is supposed to be one.

Just take the shifter plate off (or lift it enough) and twist off the light socket and replace the bulb.

There are also bulbs for each ashtray, if you want to get those while you are there.

Just like Jaskispider said. You might also want to consider replacing them with LED bulbs. They'll last much longer.

Also don't forget to slide the gearshift lever through the plastic slide thing under the cover where the bulb is located. If it isn't located in the right place you can't move the lever to 2 or 1 (if you had a reason to do so that is).
