Kevin, DO NOT SIMPLY PULL IT OUT! This is very bad advice as you will never get the new one back in without tearing down the entire column.
You will need to tear the column down only to the turn switch level which will require you removing the lock plate. If you disconnect the stalk wires toward the base of the column (under the dash) be sure to attach a fish tape to the end of those cables and draw them back up through the column. Once that is done connect the leads for the new stalk to the fish tape and slowly draw them back through the column. PM me your email address and I can send you photos of the process. I have done it on 3 columns. It ain't fun but it ain't brain surgery either.
