Will a round trim door skin work on a grooved trim, in other words can you put grooved trim on a round trim door skin? Are GT door skins the same as notchback door skins?

Door skins are all the same. I believe the GT skins will have holes for the ground effects though.

I believe the only difference is the shape of the molding and I really not sure what year they change but I think it is 87.

No, the 84 door skins attach to the door differently than the other years. To put 84 door skins on a later model car you will need 84 doors. The molding can be swapped on door skins, it is not integral to the plastic of the door.

So an '86 door skin won't fit on an '84 door. But an '86 door will fit on an '84 body and the '84 trim will fit on the '86 door skin? I say '86 because I have access to one.

The skin I'm thinking of replacing is broken out above the mirror, a small strip between the window and the mirror(someone clipped the mirror). It sounds like it would be cheaper and easier to repair the broken out piece?
